Amir M (es) wrote: When he's posted to a provincial Indian town, policeman Dev (Prithviraj) goes after the local thugs with disastrous consequences. Outraged by Dev's attacks, Veera (Vikram), head of the bandits, kidnaps Dev's new wife, Ragini (international superstar Aishwarya Rai), and takes her deep into the jungle. Despite Ragini's initially strong hatred for her captor, the pair slowly starts to develop passionate feelings for each other, causing various emotional conflicts for the three protagonists. The story is based on the Ramayana, a sacred Hindu text. The cinematography of the Indian jungles is so breathtaking that I was almost gasping for air. Raw with emotion, intense, tragic, and haunting, this Tamil-language epic is one of the best and most underrated Indian flicks in recent memory.

Sol C (gb) wrote: This film strikes out. I felt like I had seen this type of film before and done better (example: Somewhere). The majority of the cast in my opinion are miscast. The only one that shines is Shaylena Mandigo playing little Ellen. She steals the film. The cinematography and editing are terrible here. The pacing is off. Some scenes are too slow.

Denise H (au) wrote: The Boston Globe gave this movie 4 1/"2 stars (see movie cover)...I give it 5 stars! A movie you need to watch over and over to understand the political machinations being done during the 1930's and WWII. The Jews were being killed in "death camps"...all the world leaders knew. It was documented, there were eye witnesses and protests but NOTHING was done except some general "tsk tsk's". In the 1930's when the insane, the crippled were killed in Germany because they were "non-productive" citizens there was a public outcry in GERMANY and the killings of these people stopped. When the Jews were rounded up (in plain site on a day-to-day basis), people believed they were being "re-located" to work camps....millions of them. Yet some people followed their hearts and worked to denounce these atrocities. And this story is about two of them...

Robbie B (it) wrote: Poor acting, poor writing. The leading actress' performance is vanilla and stale with very little believable emotion. The character is unsympathetic and you wish the evil would kill her mid-way through the film. The possession scenes are campy and the cast acts as if a person floating midair and sprouting fangs is a fairly normal circumstance. I do realize that this film is written and directed by Sam Raimi in his camp Evil Dead/Army of Darkness style, but it fails to recapture that feeling with awkward scenes and a cast that appears to have phoned-in their performances.
