Cameron J (ca) wrote: An influential musical that started out a wave of "backstage musicals" - not my favorite kind of musical, I must say, but Lloyd Bacon's "42nd Street" is nonetheless a creative and enjoyable production, with excellent production design (I'm mostly referring to the props and sets designed for the actual stage musical which features as the film's final act), a good cast, and memorable cinematography, especially the famous through-the-legs shot. Some of the shots are edited together in seemingly experimental ways that are more cheesy today than exciting, but I give the film props for trying out new things. The songs aren't that bad, either, though the titular "42nd Street" song is the only one that had me tapping my feet along with the film. The musical sections of the film (the third act) are more entertaining than the dramatic moments, which involve many girls trying to get the leading part in the show (with many innuendos to sexual favors given to the producers), and a stereotypically angry director yelling at them as they try to put on the show. It's remembered for the music and the technique, though, and it gets those mostly right.
Benjamin L (au) wrote: Most of you people forget what makes this movie a cult classic. Apart from the cast (which was very well put together), the movie deigners created a truly imaginative environment, staying true to the lightheartedness that I grew up with after reading the stories, and then the movie. Higher up on the list, the story is as inviting as the world it's set in, enveloping us in a story of the meaning of family, friendship, the truth of taking a role of "dad", and even the importance of the happy thought. Truly an original family movie you can watch again and againP.S. you know the critics are wrong when more people like the movie than the critics do.
Dylan W (jp) wrote: One of my favorite films. The perfect buddy cop movie. Non biased 4stars, personally 5 stars. The set up to the characters is great. The comedy is funny, a couple of gut busters. The action is real and believe able. The crash of characters fit the actors very well. Excellent writing, good performances, solid action, and all around good film making.
