Jonny P (gb) wrote: "Daylight" is everything that you hoped it would not be. The concept is actually pretty interesting and could have become an amazing disaster film, but the acting is simply some of the worst that you will ever encounter. There came a point where I starting rooting for certain characters to die just so that I didn't have to watch them act anymore. It is just atrocious. Stallone set a poor precedence for the rest of his castmates. After watching this wooden performance, nobody would ever believe that he was once nominated for an Oscar. The acting is painful to watch (especially the Birdemic-level performance of Jay O. Sanders), but there are also some major issues with the script. Nothing spoils an intense moment like a felon on a prison transport blubbering like a baby and a woman wrestling around with an electrical wire for 20 minutes with boots on her hands. While it may seem like the campiness of the film might make it a fun watch, it takes itself too seriously to be funny. Watch if you must, but there are dozens of disaster films that I'd rather watch.

Mike M (nl) wrote: A raggedy kind of masterpiece... Given Rocha's fondness for photographing the faces of non-professionals, you might be inclined to bracket "Black God, White Devil" as neo-realism, were it not that the film's wilder, more fantastical moments suggest a parched spaghetti Western - except that its massacres owe some debt to Eisenstein in their composition and the dynamism of their editing, individual episodes are linked by popular folk songs (!), and the symbolism is highfalutin in the extreme: these characters are stranded in the desert like figures in Biblical parables... By no means an easy film for the uninitiated, but its raw cinematic power seeps through whatever gaps arise in your comprehension.

Jeff B (au) wrote: Not sure why this film is receiving such rave reviews. First, it was a bit lengthy, certainly could have been cut to 90 minutes for greater effect. Second, there is SO much going on in Africa and the corrupt power plays that are just completely ignored. If you know anything of what has transpired in Africa, especially post-colonialism, you'll know that there is so much more the film could have dealt with. And sure, war is hell, but when coups occur over the weekend while the press is away, you'll just begin to understand not only the volatility of war in Africa but its total futility. There is little meaning other than what a corrupt few bring to it for their own selfish gains. The people are rarely considered in the least, mere paws, dog meat for the corrupt elite to use as they see fit. This is the real horror of war in Africa. There is not "good side" or "bad side" just sides with little meaning other than mindless revenge against some force without meaning who's taken your family, village, and friends. Now if all what I've mentioned was incorporated into Beasts of a Nation (apt title, though), then and only then would this be a film of high merit. As it is, it's just depressing, disgusting fodder for the viewer with little merit or a lending of greater understanding to help fight such mindless, useless scourge from ever occurring again.
