Allan C (br) wrote: As a complete film, I'm not sure this one quite comes off, but in terms of being a love letter to grindhouse cinema, it's filled with wonderful touches throughout that make it an absolute treat for fans of 1970s exploitation flicks (which I came to love in the 80s on VHS). Touches that I loved in "Death Proof" were the faux scratched up print, the costumes that looked both contemporary and period, the missing scenes, the film's title change ("Quentin Tarantino's Thunder Bolt" that appears onscreen for a split second), bad rack focusing, the film title font choice, the subtle reference to other classics like "Gone in 60 Seconds" in the film's opening title sequence or references to cheerleader and muscle car movies or to voyeuristic giallo films or even dialogue references to classics like "Vanishing Point" or "Big Wednesday," and then there's the casting of Kurt Russell, which that in and of itself is enough to evoke nostalgia from 80s Gen-Xers who should be thrilled to see Russell getting to play a badass once again. The story is one of the film's weak points, which is unusual for a Tarantino film. The story follows two separate sets of beautiful women being stalked by serial killer Stuntman Mike (Russell) and his Death Proof car, but maybe the implausible story and gaps in logic are part of Tarantino's homage to exploitation cinema. Another complaint is that some of the dialogue, particularly in the first half of the film, although entertaining didn't seem to serve either the story or character development, which Tarantino usually does so well. But again, Tarantino may just have been riffing and having fun with this freewheeling film. But for all it's flaws, this is still a highly entertaining film and it's impossible not to enjoy the badass showdown between Stuntman Mike and the second set of women, who happen to include amazing stuntwoman Zoe Bell. This film should have made Zoe Bell an action star, but that may not have happened since there are so few female action roles in Hollywood. Tarantino really knocks it out of the park with the film's final chase and action sequences, which are greatly aided by Tarantino's excellent choice of music (though the music choices throughout the film are great). If you had any misguided belief that this was a throwaway film on Tarantino's part, he again proves himself as a true "cinema guy" and does deliver some moments of pure cinema (moments that could not be captured in books, animation, comics, or any medium outside of film). Besides any scene with Russell, I think my favorite moment of the film is was when Zoe Bell is on the hood of the Dodge Charger and Tarantino has the camera go into close-up on Rosario Dawson's face, who is at first terrified by Bell on the hood and then slowly comes to the realization that Bell is loving it, as Dawson breaks out into a smile. It's a great performance by Dawson, but Tarantino's slow zoom and patience to hold on Dawson are just brilliant. Like most Tarantino films, this one features a deliciously eclectic cast, that besides Russell and Bell includes Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, Jordan Ladd, the underrated Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eli Roth, Michael Parks as Earl McGraw and James Parks as Edgar McGraw, Marley Shelton, and Nicky Katt. Although this film is likely Tarantino's weakest film, it's still a solid film and well worth watching.

The best part about this movie is the "Game of Death" style ending. Plot: Matt Hunter (Michael Dudikoff) is a former army intel op hired as a bodyguard for his friend, now running for political office, Steve James (Larry Richards). James starts receiving threats from a right-wing group called the Pentangle. They're comprised of ex-special forces soldiers and funded by a shady millionaire, Glasteby (John Ryan). They enjoy playing a game of "Surviving the Game" with their enemies in the Lousiana bayou. No matter how hard the group tries to intimidate James, he refuses to quit his campaign. The Pentangle decides to kill James and kidnap Hunter's sister. This causes all hell to break loose! Hunter goes crazy and decides to take on the Pentangle alone on their home turf (the bayou). Hunter takes everyone down one-by-one in a game of "seek and kill." I thought the Pentangle's costumes and masks were an original touch. This movie is another forgotten 80s action flick that is worth seeing, especially if you're an action buff like myself.

Since I was going into this film blind, I had to be patient with it and not let my first judgement define my overall opinion of the film. The film may be a slow-burner, but it didn't take long for me to be impressed with it.This is a sort of film that requires patience and the correct mindset for the audience, as Pather Panchali takes its time in fleshing out its characters and for any significant drama to actually occur. The film essentially follows an Indian family that resides in the province, exploring the physical, emotional, and psychological difficulties that they had to endure. I admire Satyajit Ray's handling of the film's story, allowing the film's complication be always present on its characters; their difficulties is not found during a single event, the battle is found in their daily lifestyle, trying to feed themselves, send the children to school, earning wages in order to make their living situation bearable. I was able to care so much for their problems because I came from a country that features this lifestyle as commonplace. I was fortunate enough to be part of the middle class section of society, therefore I never had to physically be in the position that the family in this film were in.Before seeing this film, I had always somewhat envied the simplistic lifestyle and values of a province family, as from a distance I have always seen them as peaceful beings whose only goal in their day is to have the bare essentials. Pather Panchali has allowed me to see the situation in a more personal and intimate light; as of now, I could not be more grateful for the position I am in. The fact that I have an intact home, more than enough food to eat, and employment opportunities are not too difficult to come by, makes me both happy and sad.My main issue with the film is that the pacing of the film feels too steady at times, lacking any sort of intensity or drama during the middle sections of the film. The film's 40 minutes has explored the family thoroughly, therefore by then the film should have delivered something that would impact its characters heavily, which the film does deliver but not until the final act of the film. It takes too long for the film to arrive at that point, leaving me a bit unfocused during the some of the events that takes place in the second act.The choice of having the film be shot on location may be primarily due to the fact that the budget was limited for the production of this film, but I personally feel it helped capture the authenticity of the character's living situation. It was as if, I wasn't watching a film, but rather these individuals were living and breathing right in front of me. Also due to the budget reasons, the film was shot in black and white which I think helped in capturing the difficulties and their internal suffering due to their lifestyle.I have always had a curiosity to explore Indian music, as there is something about it feels so soothing. Ravi Shankar's sitar based score, allowed this sense of immersion to the Indian provincial environment. Though effective in that regard, I did feel his work could have packed more punch in delivering the film's emotion, as the major event that takes fold in the film's third act lacked a bit power in its attempt to become melancholy.Pather Panchali is a wonderful depiction of provincial life and also a great starting point for exploring the cinema of India and legendary director, Satyajit Ray.
