In 13th century Ireland a group of monks must escort a sacred relic across an Irish landscape fraught with peril.

Ireland, 1209. An island on the edge of the world. A small group of monks begin a reluctant pilgrimage across an island torn between centuries of tribal warfare and the growing power of Norman invaders. Escorting their monastery's holiest relic to Rome, the monks' progress is seen through the eyes of a pious young novice and a mute lay-brother with a violent past. As the true material, political and religious significance of the bejeweled relic becomes dangerously apparent, their path to the east coast becomes increasingly fraught with danger. The monks belatedly realize that in this wild land of ancient superstitions, the faith that binds them together may ultimately lead to their destruction. . Adam B (gb) wrote: Definitely gritty and harsh, but also a solid portrait of an alcoholic. And...yeah that's pretty much the story. Pain and substance abuse is sort of intertwined with the characters and the short but sweet plot. Nice little mini love story in there too.

Niral G (us) wrote: The same basic story as Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, except better and done about 30 years before.

Nannina G (ru) wrote: Works less well as a comedy than some of Preston Sturges' other films, but like The Great Moment, it seems to be wanting to do more than make people laugh, and though it doesn't always succeed I have to admit to getting a little choked up at the end. It is an interesting film in that it shows the pressure on men during WWII to be in the army, and the difficulty and even shame that the ones who were discharged from the army for medical reasons went through. It also more subtly and through comedy in most places shows the challenges that returning soldiers faced when coming home to find that not only they had changed, but their friends and family had as well. Preston Sturges, with a light hand as ever, even deals with post-traumatic stress syndrome, and the fact that a "hero" usually did not feel like one. If you watch it expecting only a light comedy you'll be disappointed, because it doesn't work very well as that, but the undercurrents are fascinating, and that's what makes it worth watching.
