Forced to work the docks to provide for his family, Braddock gets a second chance when his former trainer/promoter (played by Paul Giamatti in an Academy Award nominated performance) offers him a spot as a replacement fighter. This movie is based off of a true story, and, for the most part, the facts hold up. Whenever I watch a movie based on reality, I like to look into the real story to see what was exaggerated for the sake of film. Apparently, the biggest exaggeration in this movie was the portrayal of the "villain" boxer Max Baer, who in real-life was considered a gentleman instead of the crazy cliche we got on screen. My absolute favorite part of this movie was the film score. Thomas Newman, the mastermind behind the music for the Shawshank Redemption, understands emotions and creates music that matches the tone of this film perfectly. The performances from Crowe and Giamatti were also great. However, this felt like a big soap-opera. When things went south, not a scene went by when we didn't get a lingering shot of one or more characters having a case of the sads with somber music in the background. It was really overkill in my opinion. Ron Howard has directed his fair-share of emotional movies, but he really went overboard on the emotional turmoil, which is hard considering what a tough time it really was. I understand that this is a great story of a true Cinderella Man representing overcoming tough obstacles during a low point in American history, but with movies like Rocky, Million Dollar Baby, and even Ali, Cinderella Man falls short as a sports film great. The 2-hour-plus runtime drags along, forcing you to endure the melodrama longer than you'd like. Is it a bad movie? No. Forgettable? Absolutely.
Paul K (mx) wrote: Richard Gere continues to be watchable as the charming gynaecologist surrounded by too many women in every direction. Eleanor was happier after we established that this is a comedy. Dallas Texas is however worlds away from the existence of most of us. The whole of its culture is portrayed as affluent beyond belief - the result no doubt of a century of oil wealth pouring in. This man has problems? I should have such problems ... the Guardian has it that 'the female characters are sympathetically realised in this complex and rewarding comedy'.

Watch condo transform a canvas over (and over) a two year period of work. The work evolves continually over the course of the film and time. Very inspiring and probably my favorite film about an artist.

The two old ladies hold their own though, also Peter Lorre is really great with his Boris Korloff look-a-like played by Raymond Massey. A nice little thriller to watch on Halloween just make sure to check your cellars before for any bodies.

Michael W (it) wrote: Bettie Davis throughout the whole film nails her role as the psychotic sister.Deliriously played on center stage; the life of two sisters who fame makes them sinister towards each other. We all know childhood fame can manufacture the most destructive celebs, Lindsey Lohan is every ones favorite example of child-star gone wrong. That's the premise to this film, Bette Davis's character was a child-superstar, with a huge fan-base her stage name was Baby Jane. It amazed me how quickly the film goes through the trivial back-story so quickly, so the film can let the main plot play out with a thriller type plot with horrific outcome. Neatly adapted screenplay from a novel I am sure is just as surprising and sinister as we watch two sister go through a story that shows close relation to Stephen King's Misery, as a envious and jealous sister who's child-star years have drifted like wreckage in the sea, takes out a built-up anger for her crippled sister, who's fame has had a more popular after-life; we watch shockingly as she pushes and torments her sister to death! Will she kill her? Will someone find out whats Baby Jane is doing. Only time will tell in this, psychotic-horror.With a fine cast, this film needs no help, Opening quickly and to-point; although the ending could had a couple seconds longer, the movie heads into a dysfunctional and deadly relationship of two sister, ultimately leaving behind a frightening film about the essence of jealousy.
