(us) wrote: Angelina Jolie is known for giving Academy Award-winning, and nominated, performances. 'Taking Lives' is not one of them. Without any ancient temples to explore or other action-packed situations to distract the audience, Jolie basically has to shoulder the film on her own, which is a tough task considering the weak plot and poor supporting cast.At the center of 'Lives' is an investigation into a serial killer who takes on the identity of each new victim. On paper, this storyline sounds somewhat interesting, although overdone. While the setting of Montreal is a nice change of pace compared to overdone locations like New York and Chicago, it does little to solve the problems with the film. For one, it tries to be something it's not, including a series of cheap jump scare moments that make it feel more horror than suspense thriller. The dialogue is also pretty cringe-worthy, and it doesn't help that normally good actors, including Ethan Hawke and Kiefer Sutherland, portray characters who are written very poorly.Perhaps the worst part of 'Lives' is the predictable yet still awful ending. Not that one would expect a solid ending given the quality of the rest of the film. But still, it's a letdown considering Jolie does everything she can to salvage things.'Taking Lives' was never supposed to be a film that left a lasting impact, and it certainly will become long forgotten in the rest of Angelina Jolie's film library.

(nl) wrote: Sorry but, I did not like this too much. It felt a bit too forced from the beginning and even as jokes it felt flat for me. After that, the film seemed to rehash some 70s ideas about liberty, women lib theme. The right to fool around with anyone they meet. In another country, the choice being limited... I wasn't moved. I still think Sofia is cool though. Good effort. A french film.

(gb) wrote: Jim Sheridan's magnificent and dream-like memoir of confronting grief and loss in 80s New York fully deserved its Academy Award nominations, and should be more widely known. The measure of his greatness as director and co-writer is the subtlety of the performances he elicits from the entire cast and his resistance to anything manipulative or corny.
(mx) wrote: Over-acting,scene-chewing and 2-dimensional characters...and thatsnot even mentioning the wrestlers.Still an enjoyable family movie.
(gb) wrote: When I was 13 I probably thought that this deserved an academy award. I used to laugh hysterically at this now I realise how bad it was. Really bad sex jokes. "Ward, I'm worried about the Beaver" :-/
(au) wrote: The film tries so hard not to offend anyone (given the time it was made) that it never reaches its potential. Yet the fun characters and animated segments help it to be a fun, innocent kids film.

(gb) wrote: This is a new release on Netflix as of this writing. At the very beginning of the movie it states "the film you are about to see is based on true events". If you do not know what that means for a feature movie, please look it up.I gave this movie a one star rating due to:-Atrocious acting from all main characters-No complexity or depth for any characters for you to build any connection or sympathy for them-Run of the mill horror film scare tactics, nothing new hereThe only things I liked about the movie were a couple of comedic internet meme references and a "revelation" scene towards the end that was shot with back story characters. The actors in this scene performed much better than the main character actors and it was as if it was filmed by a different director and crew. Too bad that only lasted a few minutes of the movie instead of its duration.I do not recommend adding to your watch list.
