The narration jumps back and forth in time, and each sequence is an emotional roller-coaster. I marvel most at the perfect choices in scene structure. Putting the first morning sequence before the first meeting sequence adds an element of mystery to this woman and their relationship. Even the scene-level choices are excellent: when the child comes home - how many songs did they have to consider before deciding on "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which works perfectly with the theme and the emotional effect of the moment?Overall, I had to look back at the other nominees for Best Foreign Language film, and while I understand why The Great Beauty won, I only now realize how tough a choice that was.

Thomas is a very ordinary person who has experienced a great deal of sadness in his life. Each troubling incident is somehow tied to Alfred, who was born on the same day as Thomas and raised in a more wealthy family. As their lives continue to intersect, Thomas feels that he has always rightfully deserved the life Alfred has. Jaco Van Dormael structures this film adeptly, weaving memories and fantasies throughout the story arc of the elderly Thomas as it builds toward its climax. The result is a deeply moving tale of love, loss, and the forces that shape a person's identity and purpose in life.

James B (es) wrote: Pretty early in this movie I had written it off, and regretted putting the movie on. We continued to watch, and it actually ended up being a pretty good movie. Jude Law's character is so arrogant that at times it just made you dislike the movie itself. After a few scenes though you realize that his character is kind of a buffoon really, and some of the best scenes are with co-star Richard E. Grant's character Dickie. It's pretty funny really.
