Japes (ca) wrote: Possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. Do NOT watch this movie. You'll thank me later. This movie is about a girl named Laura who has a lot of trouble paying bills, rent, groceries, and clothes. In order to pay for her things, she turns to prostitution. She is also a college student, so she's trying to get good grades as well. This movie absolutely SUCKED. There was NO point to the plot at all. The entire movie exploits the actress who plays Laura. There is so much unnecessary sex, rape and nudity scenes. I hope the actress who played Laura got paid bank because that was so inane. The script was forgettable, the acting was terrible, and the plot was stupid and pointless. The main problem was that Laura couldn't pay the rent so she became a prostitute. The entire movie was her trying to make cash. It was stupid, and Laura's character was so bland. Is the audience supposed to feel sorry for this girl? Is that what the movie was trying to do? Laura is a straight up dumbass. She complains about being a prostitute saying she doesn't like it, but she keeps doing it anyway. She's been raped, tortured, lied to, exploited....and she has the sense to continue? What a fucking idiot. She has no money because like most college students she's too stupid to budget her money wisely. She goes out to eat far too often, she pays for other people's goods, and she buys too many expensive clothes. No fucking shit she doesn't have any money to pay rent! Maybe if she wasn't such a dipshit she'd have enough money to pay the bills. I felt no sympathy towards this girl, and I felt like the movie was such a waste of time. This movie was so dirty and disgusting I left halfway through to go do something else, then I came back and I saw I hadn't missed anything. This movie is a fucking joke. Laura is so stupid, but stupid is not a strong enough word. She's a fucking dumbass dipshit, and I'm very unhappy that everything worked out for her at the end of the movie. I hope she gets an STD and dies.

Art S (kr) wrote: Epic prison flick shot on location in Jamaica (substituting for Devil's Island and surrounds in French Guyana) with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman doing it tough after their convictions for pimp-killing and counterfeiting, respectively (although McQueen claims to be innocent). Focused primarily on action rather than on thoughts (apart from dreams of escape), the film lacks the depth I had hoped for (and you can see this in other films by the same director, Schaffner: Planet of the Apes, Patton, Boys from Brazil). McQueen does a nice job of transforming from a steely tough guy to an addled old fool with rotten teeth (still dreaming of escape) but Hoffman's performance seems rather one-note (if dedicated). Based on a supposedly true story by Papillon himself (Henri Charriere), the film has that seventies blockbuster look and feel but it doesn't rise to the status of the great classics. Still, if you can handle the length, there are enough struggles and setbacks for the prisoners to hold your interest and the scenery looks great.

Cliff J (au) wrote: The action is jaw dropping. The film is beautiful. The protagonist is compelling. But this movie kinda reminded me of Rocky IV...except this time the Russians were the Japanese. So it was really exceptional Chinese propaganda, but it was still kinda Chinese propaganda. That said, if someone told me they were interested in a martial arts film, I would not hesitate to recommend.
