Brett H (jp) wrote: An eerily unsettling "found-footage" horror film that takes its time building up tension and fleshing out characters to root for before delivering one of the most memorable and disturbing final moments I've ever seen. The story centers around a group of paranormal investigators employed by the Vatican to debunk oddities, who are summoned to a remote church to authenticate whether the bumps in the night are a "miracle" or a local hoax. Straight out the gate we are given two wonderful characters who provide us with great depth and hilarious banter back and forth, with the character, Gray, stealing the show. Once they begin investigating the church (usually at night) the film does fall into familiar territory with recent horror films, but the director manages to insert subtle, blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments (like a particular gravestone scene that was BRILLIANT) that reward the viewer for paying attention. The characters use head-mounted cameras to document what is happening and while they fix the shaky-cam problem with these types of films, they also never go back and review some of their footage, especially from cameras set up in the church that would prove that something is amiss. Upon reaching the climax I was hooked into what was going on and the final moments will absolutely chill you to the bone if you can use your imagination to buy what goes down. Did it scare me? Not exactly. Is it memorable? YES.

Raul N (es) wrote: I found it really enjoyable. Cameos everywhere, references, and occasionally cringe worthy scenes that only catch you offguard if you expected something different. The movie is enjoyable but go in with the right attitude, dont expect shakespeare.Pay attention to the good sets, genry savvy characters, broad irish accent in a cowboy, doc, unapollogetic ending.

Chloe C (es) wrote: forgiveness does not mean we forget, but we lift the feelings of anger and grief to God (sometimes, hour by hour)... a good movie.

Rachel T (it) wrote: The kid is great in this. The story a little weak at times, but some solid performances and cute moments.

Ryan J (us) wrote: Actually kinda funny and had some clever dialogue.

Fatal F (de) wrote: Hard to follow story that was mediocre at best. A few plot twists, but not enough time was spent on resolution. Some serious issues got resolved in just a few seconds and we didn't get to see how. Some slapstick comedy that wasn't funny. I guess I was hoping for a unique viewpoint on sexuality in Spanish cinema, but it seemed very Americanized. I disagree with the R rating for the U.S. release. Common sense rating for anyone who's not a neo-conservative would be PG-13.

Joel W (it) wrote: One of the most compelling romantic dramas I've seen. About loneliness, hope, the fear and fulfillment of intimacy. Full of fascinating and likeably dysfunctional characters. I didn't know anything about this movie before I saw it and it revealed itself beautifully . . . but it continues to hold up on subsequent viewings.

Rolf R (nl) wrote: Canadian writer-director Sheri Elwood did this fine film set in a small fishing town where writer Lynn Redgrave has written a story that gets depicted within the movie as she tells the story to a disgruntled teen girl (Julia Brendler) Two films in one. Redgrave's story about a sadden girl parallels that of Brendler's. Kirsten Dunst plays the story-girl and gets top billing, which Brendler, who is very good, doesn't.

Sian J (es) wrote: Superb acting, writing and characters. It's darkly sweet and funny - if that combination can exist! If it isn't always realistic, then it is always deeply human. Really, I'm not sure if I'd want to live in a world without Alan Bennett!

Christopher J (br) wrote: Let's see, it's Italian, the hero has a perm, Fred Williamson has exploding arrows, there's at least a little boobage, the gay bikers rape the hero when he's been captured, there's explosions and trampoline stunts aplenty, people explode from supergun blasts and said exploding arrows, Claudio Simonetti did the score in total "I just whipped this together in 2 weeks" synthesizer form, and it's all directed by Enzo Castellari.I'm sorry, but that fucking rules. :)

Cindy I (mx) wrote: A direct remake of "Rashomon", but set in the old west rather than Japan. Paul Newman stars in the role that Toshiro Mifune played in the original -- that of a bandit (Mexican rather than Japanese) who rapes a woman and murders her husband....or did he? Pretty good if you've never had the chance to see Rashomon, or are put off by subtitles. Along with Newman, other cast members include Lawrence Harvey, Claire Bloom and Edward G. Robinson. William Shatner even makes a decent, although overly dramatic (as usual) appearance as the preacher. Interesting to see if you know Rashomon well. Many scenes are plucked directly from the original, with even the dialogue pretty much intact. Probably unnecessary, but not irritating like the Psycho remake. One flaw -- Paul Newman as a Mexican?!?! He did a good job, but those blue eyes don't quite fit the part.

Matt G (mx) wrote: After this second viewing, my thoughts are really pushed forward that this SHOULD'VE been a critique of suburban boredom and paranoia. Instead, it's basically a support for it. However, it's still a cute, funny, and watchable little 80s comedy. Dante's visual style of bright Americana against cartoon-like macabre is perfect, and no one is better than Hanks at silly screaming. Just wish it ended 5 min earlier.
