(ca) wrote: Decent movie. The change in setting and characters helps this installment to slightly reinvigorate the franchise. It's also fairly well-made, it does well go veer away from the formula of the franchise, and has good performances from its two leads Jacobs and Fernandez. The ending, unfortunately, prevents it from being a good film.
(br) wrote: Heaven Is for Real boasts a stirring story for viewers wishing to see beyond the clouds of life, as well as a surprisingly lighter touch than you'd expect from a faith-based drama, but that isn't always enough to save this moving screenplay from overstepping its boundaries into manipulative territory.

(ag) wrote: This study of the dynamics between two sisters (Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh) and what their relationship means to one another is driven by the raw performances of the two leads in Noah Baumbach's naturalistic comedy drama. Kidman's complex Margot, a talented, neurotic writer, who is rightly described at one stage as a monster, engages in a beautifully written and performed manipulative, self-serving relationship with her young son Claude (an incredible Zane Pais); it's the sort of kinship that is worthy of psychoanalysis. The film is unfortunately let down a little by Jack Black in the final act, who fails to hit the mark when the material demands sensitivity; his emotional breakdown comes across a little too unintentionally humorous to be affective, but this is where Leigh, as his likable fiance, carries the scene. 'Margot at the Wedding' is Baumbach's unsung masterstroke. It's not a perfect film, but the writer/director has constructed a fascinating piece with the perfectly cast Kidman, Leigh and Pais soaking up the screen, inviting the viewer into their world and refusing to let them leave.
(us) wrote: Shockingly, utterly, stunningly woeful. Picked up at RedBox as everything interesting was already gone, the description made me think it would match the audience' interests (my wife, sister and I watched it after the kids went to bed), but ti really set the bar at a new level in bad movie-making. Terrible acting, appalling script, ridiculously absent plot line, constantly (and blatantly) bad sound in oh-so-many interesting ways (bad dubbing, changing volumes within the same scene, different noise-levels for each actor in a 2-person conversation). We actually found it slightly engaging for the first 20 minutes in pointing out the ways in which it was crap, but that wore off. Reminded me of the Hollywood straight-to-video I could rent in the early 80's. Unless you are feeling truly masochistic and lack the energy to beat yourself up, do not rent this movie.

(gb) wrote: Pleasant surprise. I'd never heard of this one, but the catchy title caught my eye, so I watched it and was soon recommending it to others, whom also liked it in return. "Albino Alligator" is a movie about three thieves that take a few people at a New Orleans bar hostage. The criminals don't really mean any of the hostages any harm, at least not until the police start to wait right outside the bar and the three criminals don't know what to do to get out with freedom still on their side. "Albino Alligator" is a pretty good movie, especially when you consider that it was the first movie that Kevin Spacey directed. It's not the best movie of its kind, but it's not bad either. It all happens inside a bar in the basement of a building and the plot doesn't change much the whole movie, but it does have a few interesting twists that keep the movie from being boring. All three of the criminals do a great job in the acting department, especially Matt Dillon. The hostages, led by Faye Dunaway, also do a good job of acting. This movie is both chilling and entertaining, and I recommend anybody who likes movies that center around criminals and hostages to get "Albino Alligator." NOTE: That was my Amazon review from the year 2001.

(ag) wrote: This was a nice movie, and nice story. I have to point out though that I didn't like this quite as much as the first White Fang film, which had better plot and story telling. This started interestingly but sort of ran on its place about half of the movie. The Zen in the art of Archery - scene seemed cliched and totally out of place in a movie depicting American Native people. I did wonder about the cool hairdo of the girl and boy who were the main characters, and how their hair and clothes looked so clean and tidy during the whole film despite of the harsh life in the wilderness. The story itself was interesting and the story of the two main characters was nice, but so much more depth could have been brought into it. Also the film didn't bring out Native American culture a lot. The beautiful alaskan wilderness was there, but still far from enough, as was the case with the first of the White Fang films. There was something odd about the screenplay and music reminded me of some episode of McGyver or some other 90's television show. It did have some exciting moments, like the chase in the wilderness and escape from the mines, but mostly this film was about anticipation of something cool which then didn't come about and sort of made the film flat like a pancake. As always, I value any interesting films featuring Native Americans, Indian Princesses and Wolves. I think the film was nice but it could have been even better. Sympathy points for the nice idea.

(ag) wrote: I can't believe I waited this long to watch this film. Yeah the budget was small, the acting wasn't great, and the story wasn't anything new (especially for the time it was made), but the action was awesome. It wasn't flashy like The Raid or other new movies, it was just shot and styled really well. I would rent this VHS every weekend back in the day had I watched it years ago. This was a great era of low budget action films they just can't capture the magic of anymore.

(ca) wrote: Bro down. So this is about a group of college baseball players in the early 80's, living with each other in a communal house with only two pursuits: drinking and pursuing women. Considered to be the spiritual successor to Dazed and Confused, this is the new Richard Linklater film that really flew under the radar. A simple read through the plot description will let you know that this is no Boyhood, but that doesn't change the fact that Linklater as a director is very good at making a fun movie, especially when it focuses on adolescent males. What makes Richard Linklater such a terrific director is that he has the ability to switch gears the way that he does. Not everything he makes is going to be gunning for that Oscar even though he's full capable, and he quite rarely doubles back and repeats his work, with this film being the exception to the rule. This is just a hang out movie, and it is engineered to make you walk away feeling positive. While these are all jocks to be sure, they all have varying degrees of intelligence. Some are the stereotypical dumb ones where it is very clear that baseball is the only thing they got going on in their lives, but some of them are actually intelligent to the point of thriving, and this team atmosphere creates an interesting microcosm for all of these boys. Naturally, this leads to lots of testosterone, and they will make absolutely anything into a competition. Also, as you would guess, these are also men that are incapable of simply being polite to each other, and there is not one of them that will pass at an opportunity to give another one grief. This is exactly why this movie succeeds on the whole, and you feel like you're right there in the mix of guys who are eager to impress each other. For a movie that's about baseball, there really isn't a whole lot of the sport featured, so don't go in expecting that (think of this movie to baseball as The Big Lebowski is to bowling). Also, don't go in thinking that there is going to be a whole lot of conflict, because much like the boys featured here, priority number one is partying and having a good time. There really isn't all that much of a story, which usually is something that I take away points for, but that's really not what this movie is about. Dazed and Confused is still a more compelling film, but if you liked that movie, then you have a very good shot at enjoying this one as well.
