While Linewatch certainly has the straight to DVD feel (the script is absurd) the performances and action are good enough to overlook all it does wrong. Cuba shows that he can still carry a film and why he hasn't in such a long time is still a head-scratcher.

Chris M (ru) wrote: I rented this partially as a joke because it's my roommate's absolute favorite word , while I use it a little more sparingly. I also thought it could be fun and interesting. Unfortunately, once it establishes that the word is old and is not an acronym for anything and that the government deals with it really badly, it just turns into a volley between the bad asses and the tight asses. I know it can be satisfying to say and I know it's naughty to some other people. I would like there to have been more depth.

Never read the book so not sure if that was the overall tone of the book too, but would have liked a little more of the light hearted side of the tale. All the actors were outstanding and the cinematography spot on. Over all a good story, we'll acted but missing something.
Timothy S (jp) wrote: With most modern horror movies stressing stomach-churning gore over story and suspense, most moviegoers would rightfully assume that a film about killers who make snuff movies would only be more of the same. However, you can tell right from the opening credits that "Vacancy" is going to be something special, and you would be correct. The creative credits and unique score mimic the Hitchcock classic "Psycho", and while the two films are worlds apart, this is one of the most intense and skillfully directed thrillers of the year. There's nothing all that special about the story, but Hungarian born filmmaker Nimrod Antal, making his American debut, adds a lot of flair to the story while keeping it grounded and real. There's nothing arty or pretentious about this; it's very gritty and believable. At only eighty-five minutes, the time flies by as this is very brisk and well-paced. And yet with the short run time, it does a nice job of establishing its two main characters, and Kate Beckinsale and especially Luke Wilson, playing against type, are very sympathetic leads. You really like them, and I don't remember the last horror film that involved me as much as this one did.Antal also gives Frank Whaley his juiciest part in years, maybe even his entire career, and Whaley is up to the challenge of playing a truly despicable bad guy. It's a great part. Despite the pressure to be yet another "Saw", there's very little actual bloodshed in this picture. Instead, "Vacancy" scores big by being a throwback to the horror films of yesteryear, and it emphasizes story and suspense over sickening brutality. There's violence to be sure, but that's not what keeps you riveted to the screen.

peter h (au) wrote: Danger: Diabolik or Diabolik is a pure fun viewing from the godfather of Italian Horror Mario Bava. The tilte character Diabolik a super criminal will just about do anything inculding having sex with his partner on 10 million dollars of stolen money, slapping up a bad guy while free faling to earth or even stealing a tonne of gold via a submarine. With trippy Pshycadallic SFX and brilliant Psychadllic rock music it just adds to a fun and campy viewing experince.7/10 (also note this was the last film to be screen on MST3K)
Brad S (es) wrote: Some stories are hard to watch, but manage somehow to transcend their negative foundation. But Being Flynn can't seem to break free of its dark, depressing and vitriolic roots. It doesn't elevate the human spirit but simply makes one grateful for not being homeless and grateful that the film eventually ended. De Niro gives a strong performance like so often, but it doesn't serve a better story, so in the end it feels wasted. There's some interesting cinematography and a broad use of poetic verbiage, but these feel like consolation prizes.
