(gb) wrote: A truly great cast at the top of their form, some superb locations and cinematography already make this a fine film, but it is also that rare flower, a Ken Russell film where he didn't let over-exuberance get the better of him. The title is a bit of a misnomer, because it is as much about exploring when deep male friendships can turn into love and what happens when love dies as it is about women in love, but that's DH Lawrence's doing, not Ken Russell's. Glenda Jackson deserved her Best Actress Oscar for Gudrun Brangwen, Alan Bates his Nomination for Rupert Birkin and Ken his Nomination for the Direction. Oliver Reed smoulders throughout what is probably his finest professional performance on film as Gerald Crich (although it probably ties with the later unprofessional TV appearance on After Dark for memorability). Quite why Jennie Linden faded from view is a mystery, because she is very impressive as Ursula. The recent BBC TV adaptation was very good, but this is better.

(ca) wrote: Movie about a group of young friends (or maybe thugs?) who like having a good time together. Takes the gangster movies from the golden age and kicks it up a notch. More violence, language, and sex. But Scorsese adds religion too making it even more realistic. One of the best ever.
(ca) wrote: I made an account here just to shit on this movie.I was going to rant about everything wrong with this movie, but time for a long, detailed list instead, about everything that makes The Loft garbage. Vulgar language and spoilers will be used. You've been warned.1. Diversity? What's that? All of the main men are white. The two main women look so alike to the point I kept mistaking them for each other. Skinny, blonde hair, dark eyebrows. I kept mistaking two of the main men for each other too, so there's that as well.2. The premise. Of the movie. Is literally that five married men are so discontent with their marriages that they're willing to go out of their way to share a fuckpad behind their wives' backs. No one even seems to care about the dead woman who winds up there beyond, "I can't go to jail for this, my wife can't find out, my marriage and reputation will be ruined."3. To expand on #2, the way that the woman's death is BLATANTLY USED as an inconvenience for these "poor" adulterers and their fragile marriages and egos. Because fucking around is only an issue for them when there's a threat of getting caught.4. The stereotypes. They are everywhere, and they're harmful. Women get shit on here, don't get me wrong. But the portrayal of every man in this movie is basically, "privileged, white man is bored of his marriage and can't keep his dick in his pants, let alone how he wants to fuck some woman near him, out of his mouth." Since that's only a piece of it, let's also throw in, "When confronted about his actions, he lies like a child and casts blame to anyone but himself to save the marriage he never seemed to give a shit about in the first place because his wife is no longer a hot enough piece of ass."5. Did I put enough emphasis on how fucking horrid these characters are? Probably not. We've got a lot to tackle here, so there's the guy who buys AND RAPES a prostitute and then argues that "whores can't be raped." There's the guy who finds out that his wife, upon finding out that he's cheated, leaves him, and SENDS HIS BUDDY AFTER HER TO TELL HER THE OTHER GIRL WAS "LYING" AND THAT THE AFFAIR NEVER HAPPENED. By the way, the guy who comes over to reassure the other guy's wife? Yeah. He fucks her. That's a thing that happens.6. This character gets put on blast for sleeping with his buddy's wife, another friend's sister, and just about every girl that the other guys have interest in, and then some. So the other four secretly swear revenge on him. Even though, I don't know...THEY'RE ALL ALREADY COMMITTING ADULTERY AT THIS POINT.7. The amount. Of ass covering. That these BOYS try to do. The prostitute that was raped? They try to keep her from going to the police because they don't want to get in trouble. One of the women that one of the men were having an affair with? Two of the guys INTIMIDATE HER out of confronting his wife and telling her what's going on. Then we have the other main girl, also a prostitute, that one of the men fall in love with...and continues trying to force his love on, despite the fact that she tells him, REPEATEDLY, that that's something she can't and won't handle. I'm sorry, what are the women's feelings in this shit flick? What's consent? Right. Road bumps.8. Last and most importantly of all, what I'm most angry about: the fact that this was ANOTHER MOVIE where a guy fucks around on his wife because he's so bored and miserable being married. So he sees another woman who's supposed to be, younger and prettier, and fucks around with her instead, "in private." And throughout the movie, HIS feelings are always front and center, paraded around as more important than his wife's, or the woman/women he's using to cheat. Where the fuck do I start.I really wish this "genre" would die. It contributes nothing positive, or of any merit, to any and all who watch/read it. These are insulting caricatures of marriage and men; men who are so fickle and weak willed that they gravitate towards the first pleasing frame with nice tits and ass and legs to feel hot and young again. Marriage is nothing but a nuisance and an obstacle. His wife's feelings are nothing but a nuisance and an obstacle. The other woman/women's feelings, or lack of, are nothing but a nuisance and an obstacle. And finally, the image of a man being so willing to cheat on his wife and another woman being so willing to help him because hey, he's hot and/or rich/of good social standing is really fucking cringeworthy.I can't in good conscience recommend this movie to anyone. The reason why I even finished it in the first place was because I hated the main men all so much, I wanted to see them get shat on, because they were all so goddamn insufferable. If I could have given it less than a star, I would have. The fact that this SOMEHOW got a rating of 6.3/10 from IMDb will never cease to baffle me.To conclude, what a heaping pile of shameless garbage that was. 0/5, 0/10, would not recommend.P.S.: The ONLY saving grace, if one could even call it that, was this piece of dialogue, and I'm paraphrasing:"It didn't mean anything.""If it didn't mean anything, why'd you do it at all?"
