A young man is confined in a mental hospital. Through a flashback we see that he was traumatized as a child, when he and his family were circus performers: he saw his father cut off the arms of his mother, a religious fanatic and leader of the heretical church of Santa Sangre ("Holy Blood"), and then commit suicide. Back in the present, he escapes and rejoins his surviving and armless mother.

I suppose if you hunger for a pretend Avengers 2 movie, you could give this a try for shits and giggles. It's the same quality as the first (standard for a dvd movie but nothing special either in any regard) and the villain is......uninteresting beyond words. That and the characters are all pretty terrible here. Seems Marvel can do live-action but have no idea how to do cartoon versions - the closest they came were the kid-oriented shows of the past (Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, and most of all, X-Men which is up there with Batman as the best superhero cartoon of all time). This is aimed at all-ages (as opposed to kids) but it fails to deliver anything of interest.

(it) wrote: Occasionally fun, occasionally grating, and way, way too long. But always fascinatingly illogical, as Miike films always are (and despite his trademark jerky, muddy CGI being completely wrong for the style of the narrative). Also some surprisingly good performances, especially from Toyokawa (the main bad guy), who is frighteningly stoic, almost melancholy, and the kid who plays Tadashi who somehow manages to not be annoying, an amazing feat considering the role he's playing.
(gb) wrote: It's a pretty good movie--one of those intense dramas that goes the way they usually do. She's a woman with issues and her addiction started because of one reason, which is not like real life, so it doesn't get to the core of what addiction or self abuse is about. But it's a decent movie for what it is. Also if that person down there thinks Maggie Gyllenhaal has pancake boobs, he's either never seen great tits or never seen real pancake boobs. Either way--boobs have not been seen by this person.
(it) wrote: It's enjoyable, but a sub par comedy overall. It has a heart made of bronze, and leaves tinfoil-y taste in the mouth. The three main titular men are entertaining enough to pull the movie along, but it loses focus and that's probably what breaks the deal for most.
(de) wrote: Turn off your brains and don't compare it to the horror of the original or else you will be sorely disappointed. .Exorcist: The Beginning is an attempt (that almost succeeds but not quite) to tell the backstory of troubled father Merrin. The story is a mixed bag of interesting circumstances and dull circumstances, outrageous circumstances, intriguing circumstances, and laughable circumstances. The acting is strong from all parties involved but the overused CG really destroys the feel. The final conflict has it moments but the makeup (which is nowhere near as terrifying as Bair's) leaves a bit to be desired and the conflict itself felt a bit out of place for such a slow moving film. Not great but for people interested in Merrins past it should be ok.
