Dougal S (fr) wrote: If ever a film belies it's director's artistic roots it's this one. Russell Mulchay's history as the goto MTV music video director of the early 80s is writ large over this one. Everything is artistically shot and framed, with long moody tracking shots mixed with angled jump cuts and backlighting... plenty of backlighting. What you get for your money is basically an Aussie rip off of Jaws where the main animal protagonist is a giant wild boar intent on snacking on any poor unfortunate that gets in it's path. When an American journalist is killed by the beast her husband turns up in the small outback town to try and discover what happened. Just like Jaws the townsfolk don't believe the animal exists and it remains for the him to team up with a grizzled old boar hunter who has been chasing the critter since it killed his grandson years previously.Throw into the mix a couple of psychotic rednecks who are covering up the animals existence in order to prevent their own nefarious being discovered and you've pretty much got the plot.Portraying and desperately grim version of the outback (all abandoned machinery and waste) it builds to a stylised climax in a dog food factory as the razorback finally attacks with all the main protagonists stranded. The gore is minimal and thankfully Mulchay hides the beast in the shadows for the most part as it does seem a very un-realistic animatronic but that aside it's a punchy and stylised bit of 80s cinema for the MTV generation.

If you went to high school in the early 1980's - this is one of the funniest movies depicting that time period.. One of the few movies that maintains its perfection - even after 35 years.. This classic movie does not deserve to be any less than 90% rating.. Make sure to help boost it, if you agree.

Michael H (br) wrote: A beautifully shot Faustian tale which relies rather heavy-handedly on the power of a prop at the conclusion but has a lot to enjoy along the way. Ray Milland as Nick Beal looks an awful lot like he might have been an inspiration for the look of Robert Mitchum's Harry Powell in NIGHT OF THE HUNTER.
