He tells the tale of the history of big oil in Louisiana and the evolution of the industry to the corrupt, conniving, and thieving industry it is now."His last words were, don't let me die, I've got so much to do."Joshua Tickell, director of Fields of Fuel, Fuel, Freedom, Pump, and the upcoming Good Fortune, delivers Big Fix. The storyline for this documentary is entertaining but fairly straightforward in terms of how they covered the topic. The film does a good job of making the story current and depicting the evolution of the industry, but I wouldn't say there is anything surprising in this film."They then thought they could purchase a branch of the military."I came across this film on Netflix and decided to give it a shot because it has received such positive reviews. I will say I found the film entertaining and potentially a step down from a similar picture, Grizzly Man. Overall, this is a documentary worth watching but far from a classic or must own."Black gold in the water."Grade: C+/B- (6.5)
(es) wrote: the ending kinda failed me but it was an engrossing watch. what made the film wasn't so much the storyline but the amazing chemistry between the two female leads. the charismatic actress who played frida did an amazing job. there were no tacky, make-you-gag stuff here. in fact the cover track was quite catchy and the production values quite high. aggravating though, that the version with eng subs was such shitty quality.mia and frida, a pair of new fairytale heroines is made.

(br) wrote: This movie sucked. Like too many movies these days, there was gratuitous violence and swearing. I mean, really people, is it necessary? The main character had no moral compass and at one point was very violent towards a woman and there were sexual overtones along with the violence- sick. It was horrible to watch and I have a pretty high tolerance for that stuff, believe me! Oh, but he apologizes to her later, so it's ok, right? (Classic abuser behavior, and on Netflix as a shiny example for not-so-mature audiences watching) So during the entire movie this guy is either chasing after or being chased by the bad guys who took his son. Pretty good premise. A lot of action. That's why i gave it 2 stars. (Changed it to 1 actually) The guy did a great job of acting like he was desperately trying to save his son under a ticking clock. The plot was a little convoluted at times, it finally came together in the end, but still wasn't completely satisfying to me because my stomach was sick from the violence. Another thing this guy does is start to dance and kiss this woman he meets in a bathroom. He saves her, ironically, from this fellow woman-beater earlier in the movie. So they start making out on the dance floor, and he uses her as a ruse. Later on, when she expects more from him, like maybe for him to ask for her number or to take her home, he acts like a complete ass and gives her the meanest looks and basically tells her to % off!! Like she was some some stray animal. In other words, the main character isn't that likable and if the audience likes him they must either (a) receive Maxim magazine, (b) isn't a feminist. When the protagonist in a movie begins the movie killing and stealing, then in the middle violently threatens a woman and in the end beats up a man with violence only a psychopath could, we are heading to some gray areas between good and evil. what is happening to us, as a human race? We're supposed to identify with the protagonist, and the protagonist's morals are not only fuzzy, but straight up evil? We're not talking Bad Lieutenant, Marv from Sin City or Dexter to name a few anti-hero protagonists.... The entire movie left me with a bad taste in my mouth!! In fact I'm going to give it one star, I just changed mind. The poor son got all mixed up in this and not nearly enough camera time or empathy was focused on him, I know it's just a movie but jeez. :D

(au) wrote: Not bad. Not sure if I really understood the movie properly, I am truly baffled by all the people who write that this was one of the most influential films of the 80s. I was able to follow it alright, and the actors were and are some of the best in Britain - but I did get a sense of "and... that's it?" which usually means that in a few months I'll have completely forgotten I ever saw this. =/

(jp) wrote: Enemy of the State tells the story of Attorney Robert Dean, who through a series of unfortunate events, becomes the target of a corrupt National Security Agency operation aimed to maintain political influence. Enemy of the State is a basic but solid action thriller that is carried by the on screen chemistry between Will Smith and Gene Hackman. With the exception of Smith and Hackman, the remaining characters were unimpressive. Regina King and Lisa Bonet are certainly forgettable (if not nerve grating). Jon Voight plays the stereotypical sociopathic spook with an extra dose of cliche. Though it is a bit formulaic, the film's real success is found in its eerily prophetic concern regarding government surveillance and the accountability of those responsible for national security. Released only three years before September 11, 2001, Scott's Enemy of the State captured the heart of a policy debate before it was once again center stage in American news and politics. Overall, an enjoyable movie.
