Houdini wants to be remembered for more than just performing stunts and tricks - or so he says - there's an ulterior motive hidden under the surface. Things become even more complicated however when he falls for Mary McGarvie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) - a local conwoman who along with her daughter Benji (Saoirse Ronan) takes up the challenge. On paper this looks like a pretty decent drama, however, while it is well shot and well acted, it just doesn't work and I'm really struggling to put into words an explanation as to why. It just seems distant somehow, like you never become attached to the characters nor invested in what becomes of them. You're never made to care, which in a drama is a big problem. An almost comically daft ending doesn't help, nor do the dodgy Scottish accents.

For some reason, the film within the film comes across as very stilted and too didactic, reminding me of poor quality movies from Sunday school classes in my youth. There are also too many plot lines here that take away from the impact a single focus could have brought to the finished project. Some scenes were very effective, but not the film as a whole. However, it did bring some questions to the fore, such as why Hitler's genocide, the practical extinction of Native Americans, and the enslavement of africans all get so much attention, but the annihilation of the Armenians so little.

The film is timeless...One that pot smoking college kids will watch decades from now...and actually learn something.
