(jp) wrote: Very intense in parts and an excellent performance by William McInnes, confirming that his versatility as an actor extends beyond his days on ABC's "Seachange". The film, like the sky of its title, appeared a little 'unfinished', in the closing scenes; almost as though there was a hurry to tie up loose ends. However, this could be the director's decision to focus only on the story between the two lead roles, without spelling out details that audiences will most likely fill in for themselves.

First, because Michelle Pfeiffer looks gorgeous and is terrific as Lea de Lonval, she deserved an Academy Award nomination. She's really skillful in expressing emotions without talking, her reflexions on life, death and aging were touching, the chemistry she and Friend had was amazing. Too bad the romance between Lea and Cheri was that short. Kathy Bates is also great as the nasty Madame Peloux. The art direction, cinematography and costume design are fabulous.

(ru) wrote: "Mercury Rising" looked so great from its synopsis... but the synopsis was just vague enough to completely mislead me. In an ode to "WarGames," a young boy accidentally deciphers a secret government code. To heighten the interest of the film, the boy is autistic. At this point, one would expect the film to explore the discovery of the code and show how it is used for good or for evil; instead, it turns the film into "Die Hard" with an autistic kid. Let's see which will draw audiences in better: "An autistic 9-year-old boy cracks the U.S. government's top-secret code when an unapproved test matrix gets published in a crossword magazine" OR "Bruce Willis plays typical heroic character while protecting a kid from assassins for two hours." Well played, Universal. Movie #1 interested me while I never would have given Movie #2 a chance. Even though the plot stinks, this could have been a great vehicle for Miko Hughes to have his Rainman role, but he doesn't. His portrayal of autism is more offensive than it is empathetic. Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin doesn't do much of anything and Bruce Willis is about 30% shy of being John McClane. The film has a few interesting plot twists with several characters unsuspectingly killed off but it isn't enough to make up for the weak acting performances and the bland script.
(ag) wrote: A biopic style romance about the relationship between Sid Vicious of the punk band The Sex Pistols and his American girlfriend Nancy Spungen. The enjoyment level of this film depends quite heavily on whether you followed the band and/or the punk movement of the late 70's and early 80's. I didn't and wasn't really a fan of the Sex Pistols, but I did find this a worthwhile watch simply out of interest.

I've always enjoyed them, they have more eerie moments than genuine fright and generally have several plot twists as well. They're kind of a tame Giallo. This one was pretty good.
