Brandon W (es) wrote: Hot Rod is the directorial debut of Akiva Schaffer, and it stars Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Bill Hader, and Danny McBride in a comedy about a stuntman that wanted to make his dad proud in being an actual stuntman, only problem however, he sucks at it, and when his step-dad is dying of cancer, he wants to raise enough money to help heal him, just so he can beat the crap out of him and want to be a man out of this. I wouldn't really know what to say out of this as this The Lonely Island's first film involvement together, and it's a decent film for me, but it's very weird. The acting is good as they got the comedic timing for it, and the humor for me, is really hit-or-miss in terms of it's weird humor here. Sometimes it's fine and gets a laugh out me, but then there other stuff that is honestly too weird for me to laugh at and was more or less, "well that just happened". The characters are enjoyable, and the score is nicely put together, leaving off to the most epic scene in the film. I feel like Hot Rod is one of those films that after finishing it, people are like, "well that was something", and whether they like it or not is really up to them in terms of their taste in comedy. This film isn't for everyone, it's really weird and out there and some people would be pulled off, I almost did, but there's enough good humor in there that sucks me back in and enjoy out of Hod Rod.

Archibald T (it) wrote: I'll try to make this as brief as I can since the film itself felt just as so.A fancy lad named Nathanial graduates from school and instead of embarking on the Queen Catherine which is bound for Hawaii for where his father be he accidentally takes a wrong turn and boards The Filthy Whore. It's crew consist of 5, 6 if you count Nathanial. Each one is crusty, loud, smelly and they hate Nathanial's annoying pleads to drop him off in Hawaii. He convinces, I think, the captain's son to charter a course to Hawaii while the other drunken buffoons are asleep. It doesn't work out well. The ship has to pass through Hell's Bucket before it can reach it's destination. While stuck in Hell's Bucket they have to put up with a half man half shark, a frozen creature, raging storms and a gigantically anger salesman who tries to kill Nathanial after he slept with his six armed wife. There's also a love interest named Trina who is swimming across the ocean. Lots of great sets and effects are used in this film giving it a bizarrely surreal feel which got me to stay and watch it until the end. It's very pretty to look at, but the film's screenplay doesn't make much sense and as a comedy it's hardly hilarious. It's far from it. I may have grinned a few times especially with the cupcake spitting tobacco into Nathanial's face, but the rest is like watching a dead fish.In short, a forgotten Tim Burton production that is more memorable for it's bizarre antics and sets than it is for it's characters and story.
