Matt G (it) wrote: An interesting study of sociopathic behavior told through the people most effected. In a gripping and sad case of "fact is crazier than fiction", we get to see the real-life-Lou-Bloom Lance Armstrong accelerated rise and stark fall from grace.

Michael T (es) wrote: In a valiant attempt to make an adult "drama," Jackie Chan cries and shows his ass; the results are mediocre.

Joe H (gb) wrote: I have had this movie on my rental queue for a while, and was excited when it came today (although Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic has yet to arrive). The movie is a very interesting film. At the same time, however, it moves really slowly - and that was my biggest beef with the movie. Makhmalbaf could've thrown in some music or something to make the pacing a little bit better. The best parts about the movie were easily the directing and the cinematography. The dialogue wasn't great (maybe it's the translation), but the mountains of the Kurdish border were absolutely stunning, especially the way they were shot. This movie was really eye-opening into the kind of lives that people are living on the other side of the world. It helped remind me how good I have things.Makhmalbaf knows how to craft a film. She's created a very poetic, very smart movie. She has said that her films are metaphoric, and this definitely had an interesting message/prompt. In places like the Middle East, education isn't that important. The things that are used for education are ultimately used for what's more important to them - survival.

Kevin N (ag) wrote: Thanks to Zola's source material, this is an especially dark film for Renoir, but it is handled as delicately as possible and with incredible artistic vision. As usual, every shot is an intricate composition, and no space is wasted. Jean Gabin gives his all in a powerful performance and is backed by an equally convincing turn by Simone Simon, future "Cat Person". The adaptation is fearless, and such a violent production would never have been possible in Hollywood at the time. This is part of Renoir's supreme talent- that he can make films more explicit than his peers and bit remain poignant and artful.

Michael W (us) wrote: Rugged cop with history of rough tactics inadvertantly kills a hood using his strong-armed approach and ensues a cover-up. Not my favourite film noir but entertaining and hard-edged. Great opening, with film credits written in chalk on the sidewalk.
