Rob L (de) wrote: This striking movie will probably be little seen but merits a wider audience. Set on an island off the coast of Roman Abramovich's Russian Far East fiefdom of Chukhotka, it features two unlikely occupants of a meteorological station, inviting comparisons with another underrated film, The Hide. The younger of the two protagonists is prone to a bit of ultraviolent video game action and enjoys dicking about on the tundra - in short, he's a bit of an idle so-and-so and that naturally goes down like a lead balloon with his more senior colleague. The setting is stunning - although it's clearly only feasible to film here at the height of Summer, it's nonetheless evident that it's seriously brass monkeys. The movie seems stagey to start with but picks up pace and a polar bear even makes an appearance at one point. Excellent.

The film does a decent job at playing satire on current films of the day, the year 2000. The Wayanes bros play different roles, one as a in the closet but very obvious gay man, and the other a stoner. Other characters perform different, being either too stupid to know what's going on or very aware and being unable to escape their fate. Some don't take the obvious route to escape while others get away who you would have rather have died. The film doesn't take itself too seriously, white being self referencing and drawing heavy on other horror franchises.

Glenn C (us) wrote: Spike Lee & Martin Scorcese, an unlikely collaboration. Scorsese was originally set to direct Clockers but his commitments to Casino got in the way. He stepped aside and became producer, giving the film over to Spike Lee. It's one of the most potently graphic urban gangsta movie's there is. The movie grabs you by the throat right from the opening credits with a montage of confronting and disgusting crime scene photos. This is an ugly film with Spike Lee's trademark racial statement. During the 80s and 90s he was a truly prolific director, having made some of the most powerful and significant films of the generation. "Do The Right Thing" is his opus but for me Clockers runs a close second. Harvey Keitel, John Tuturro, Delroy Lindo, Mekhi Phifer and others all give rock solid performances and Lee's approach to the film's aesthetic creates a hard, cold and brutal drama for strong stomaches. It's a near perfect film and watching it again I can't help but feel that it had to inspire The Wire (HBO)... there are so many similarities. It's also one of the few Spike Lee films that hasn't become a victim to time and cultural change. It stands strong and hasn't dated...

Lewis E (kr) wrote: Tis a film based on the same play thou art depicting the making of (Romeo and Juliet). Thy work is clever and full of thee ole British spirit, alas not without its fair share of tom foolery and sporadic pompous use of the Shakespearean language. Thus 'Shakespeare in Love' tis an inconsistent yet charming and exuberant love story replicating the poetry of its real life inspiration. But to recommend or not to recommend, that is the question.
