Tales of Terror

Three stories adapted from the work of Edgar Allen Poe: 1) A man and his daughter are reunited, but the blame for the death of his wife hangs over them, unresolved. 2) A derelict challenges the local wine-tasting champion to a competition, but finds the man's attention to his wife worthy of more dramatic action. 3) A man dying and in great pain agrees to be hypnotized at the moment of death, with unexpected consequences.

Eric M (es) wrote: A strong indy showing from Adam Larson Broder and Tony Abrams that plays consistently until faltering in the third act. After a splendid performance from Hank Harris and Christina Ricci, the story should have closed after a predictable but satisfying last dance. However, Broder, perhaps feeling pressure to offset the films humor; went for a late denouement by sprinkling in a forced bit of irony. We are presented with a very over the top incident that puts our antagonist in a wheelchair thereby endearing him to the audience (however unsuccessfully). The result is a piece of average fair that brought to bare relevant but oft neglected subject matter such as the difference between the mental states of those who are physically disabled and those who are mentally disabled. It could have been great, but was merely good instead. Although to be fair; where the script failed to rise to the occasion Christina Ricci's nipples succeeded in spectacular fashion.

Sidney Poitier's "Detective Tibbs" is the impossible moral exemplar in a dark world unsure whether progressive politics can help urban communities out of the sad cycle pimps, drugs, and moral decay. I love the end scene when his family comes out in perfect Kennedy dress to escort him home to dinner.

Ryan J (ru) wrote: Prequel to Malevolence shows how the young Martin Bristol was kidnapped and turned into a killer. Bigger budget has more gore but 7 years still has nothing original to add to the genre. The insight to the kidnapper and how his young protege becomes an emotionless killer is good but other than that there's a lot of screaming and some massively awesome boobs from the main actress Daddario. Both films best be watched late on a boring weekend.
