Ben T (br) wrote: The Island is one of those films where the biggest problem is the director himself, Michael Bay. If ever there was a Michael Bay that didn't need to be an action film it was The Island. The Island is a film with a fantastic concept, this concept could have made for a brilliant, smart film which could have been a great think piece. However Michael Bay decided to make an action film. The Island has strengths, such as some solid performances from the actors, a very promising first thirty minutes and some legitimately cool action. However the action is completely pointless. The finale is very underwhelming and the lighting and cinematography make the action scenes very hard to watch. Also this film just has so many Michael Bay techniques that it makes this a hard film to watch. The Island is fine but to be honest this a forgettable slice of wasted potential. C

Etc.

Glen O (gb) wrote: A good little espionage movie with witty dialogue and Bogart in fine form as the weary cynic who is more than he appears. Mary Astor and Sydney Greenstreet, who also costarred with Bogart in The Maltese Falcon (also directed by John Huston) are good here. Asdor takes a more comedic turn in this than the ingratiating manipulator she plays in The Maltese Falcon. The racial stereotyping of the Japanese is what one might expect from a propaganda film of this sort. No doubt it was films like this that fed into the sentiment that saw many even second and third generation Japanese-Americans interred in prison camps for the duration of the war.
