Alecs M (es) wrote: Diego Luna has always seemed to me a lucky actor. Abel is different: it's simple story with the correct amount of fun and drama. It has a good cast mixed with some cast mistakes (Dr. is what? an actor?) and the best children dialogues I've ever heard in a film on Spanish (where kids usually have odd adult dialogues, paradoxically on this film it is not the case).

Tim S (gb) wrote: It should be a cult classic, but I don't think it is at this point. It's a shame because there is some brilliant stuff in this movie, especially the Sam Rockwell sections. They're so bizarre and weird that it makes the movie worth watching.

Tamatai N (ag) wrote: Extremely cheesy and completely nonsensical in terms of plot, etc., but still some mindless, well-made fun. You really have to take it for what it is: It's all just about style, special effects, gunfights and blowing stuff up; flying kicks and bullet-time utilized here for maximum effect. Probably not the best sci-fi/action film one would ever see. Still entertaining nonetheless.

Genevieve R (au) wrote: What can I say about this turd of a movie? I am astounded that it had not one, but three sequels and I shudder to imagine how much more terrible they must be. The performances (even from Reynolds, a seasoned actress) were mediocre, the plot uninteresting and cliched (a witch has secret powers and has to defeat the evil guy and prove herself) and the humour is bland and cheesy. Elements of the movie seemed to be copying Mary Poppins and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Halloweentown is probably one of the lamest imaginary worlds I have ever encountered. It looks like an unfriendly, unmagical, uninteresting world where the only unique element is that everyone wears a cheap Halloween costume and has magical powers. If I were a child watching this movie, I would be insulted that they expected me to believe that the monsters in the world were real when they use such tacky costumes, makeup and special effects. The whole production is very lazy, even for a made-for-TV movie. The only redeeming thing in this movie (which is responsible for my generous rating) was Judith Hoag's performance as Gwen Cromwell, the stubborn, unmovable and frankly bitchy mother who eerily reminded me of Aunt Petunia from Harry Potter. Hoag was able to portray the strict, controlling parent so perfectly that even after her change of heart I knew it would only be a matter of time before she would try to suppress her children's freedoms again. What a thoroughly evil character.

Sid A (kr) wrote: Engaging performances from Anthony Wong, Sam Lee and Roy Cheung, stark, realistic and surreal at times. Beast Cops is an excellent movie which looks at inner city cops and criminals and how they get by in Hong Kong. I think it's always going to be a favourite.

Thomas B (ru) wrote: A great lead performance from Ray Winstone brings this up a peg or two but a tired plot and an uninspiring script are glaringly obvious. Full review later.

John M (kr) wrote: An interesting almost character study dark comedy. I like how it explores the character seriously instead of just relying on quirky dark comedy style to drive him. The story isn't perfect and it's tonally hard to grasp sometimes, but this could have been a lot worse if not for smarter direction and a great performance by Ryan Reynolds.

James R (fr) wrote: Wow it had been some time since I've seen this movie, but I'm glad I revisited it (especially since I went and saw the sequel an hour after i finished this). The movie Trainspotting follows five young men that live in Edinburgh and have some problems. We mostly follow Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) a heroin addict who know's what he does is bad, but damn he's gotta life live somehow. His friends are Sick Boy (Johnny Lee Miller) who's always trying to get into a get rich quick scheme, Spud (Ewen Bremner) who's kind of the groups idiot, but he has a good heart, Tommy (Kevin McKidd) the athletic one and one of the few in the group that doesn't do drugs and then there's Begbie (Robert Carlyle) who is a complete psychopath and ultra violent toward anything that doesn't go his way. The movie follows them through some every day things including showing them get high, what it means, how it affects people and the one's around them, etc. The plot itself is loose on this, but it works. It's a dark comedy and it helps that the main leads while they may be totally lazy, drug addicts they're chemistry is fantastic. The soundtrack is really good and its mixed in with some really great scenes (the psychedelic scenes are fantastic). Solid film that holds up surprisingly well even 21 years later! If you've never seen it definitely give it a look!
