Most everyone in town thinks that Sheriff Calder is merely a puppet of rich oil-man Val Rogers. When it is learned that local baddie Bubber Reeves has escaped prison, Rogers' son is concerned because he is having an affair with Reeves' wife. It seems many others in town feel they may have reasons to fear Reeves. Calder's aim is to bring Reeves in alive, unharmed. Calder will have to oppose the powerful Rogers on one hand and mob violence on the other, in his quest for justice.

(it) wrote: Well shot, well edited, well acted, great sound design, very cool and stylish end credits. Way too much weird just to be weird and obtuse just to be obtuse and drooling of various substances out of mouths. There are people who will like this a lot more than me (and I didn't hate it, just found it to be, ultimately, disappointing).

(us) wrote: Beatty's masterpiece is long but one never seems to resent it. This is a film out of step with the anti-communist rhetoric of the time and is loving in its treatment of an American with a truly alternative point of view at the height of revolution.
(fr) wrote: This is an overlooked movie, vintage Vincente Minnelli and a classic of the genre. No one used color like Vincente Minnelli and with Rome and Cinecitta as a backdrop, the film is truly gorgeous. Kirk Douglas gives a terrific performance as the director recovering from a nervous breakdown and possibly on the verge of another, while trying to shoot his comeback picture in the Eternal City. This film is a must see if you are a fan of Minnelli and Douglas.
(de) wrote: Somewhat confusing and emotionally distant, the only truly unique or interesting thing about this film is that it was Stanley Kubrick's first (and probably his worst).
(mx) wrote: Based on the video arcade game, I was not expecting much from this to begin with. It was worse than I expected in all but one way: the ladies are smoking hot. Alyssa Milano, Julia Nickson, and Kristina Wagner (still sporting an 80s 'do) are the only positives in this martial arts adventure movie. The banter between the Lee brothers (Ug- and Home-, just an example of the brilliant dialogue) was excruciatingly awful. The choreography stunk too, 1 star is being generous.
