Laura M (ca) wrote: This movie was kind of a comedy even though no one really indicated as such? Like it was a comedy in the way that a martial arts movie can sometimes be even though it's being serious at the same time. I really, really enjoyed this one. Ajay Devgn is becoming one of my favorite actors definitely.

Nefeli M (au) wrote: It seemed to me like a 3-hour movie. I was so bored. The movie is meaningless. Bravo Sakis for your english accent.

Gabriel Arthur P (gb) wrote: This is fast, fun, funny and campy. For good-enough films I normally rate down from a perfect for various flaws but there's no reason to rate this film down. It does what it comes to do, which is obviously to "rock". If I tried to rate it from the bottom up for its virtues like a not-good-enough film, it wouldn't get that great of a score but that's because I'm not a metal head and this isn't something I'd normally watch. I got lucky, I guess, and got it as a gift from a neighbor who was moving back to Detroit. The costumers, makeup artists, and sound technicians definitely had a field day with this one. The movie has a fun premise: a rock and roll tribute band (basically a cover band that goes all the way, with dress-up and voice stylings) has its troubles until the lead singer gets the real gig as the lead singer of the band he loves so much. Jennifer Aniston and Mark Wahlberg don't over-draw or over-exert themselves, and put in a pretty genuine performance. The self-deprecating humour millennials expect is delivered subtly by everyone involved and doesn't screw up the beat. And we find out that the original lead singer is being pushed out of the band because he's lazy -- but there's a direct insinuation that it's because he's gay. Well, the casting of Mark Wahlberg for the part of the rags-to-riches dream boy was well placed, because Wahlberg is a proven natural vocal talent. Well, the movie moves on to dealing with issues of flagrant sexuality which is an everlasting hallmark of rock music, and wanton lust is a hit or miss subject for any writer. Lucky for the viewer, there are few proposed complications and the sheer megalomania is allowed to continue unabated. The movie doesn't do anything to give itself hiccoughs and that's the important part. It does lag a little, though. Around the time any kind of dramatic dilemma is introduced, I felt like the film should have about an hour left to it but there was only half an hour left to go. And it's really endearing how the climax touches the heart with the simple conundrum of honesty. Well, it's obvious that everyone involved with every aspect of the production did everything they could to send across a completely hollow feeling whenever it was needed, which is really, really important to rock music. And in the end, the film lends a note to what really makes rock music important to its fans to begin with. I think there's an ending to this film that was set up in an earlier scene and for some reason it got wrote out, but, I'm actually glad I watched it and since I feel like it should have gone on longer, I give it 5/5. The only bad thing I can say about it is that if it were a film about a Yes tribute band, I would have watched it the day it showed.

Ivan D (it) wrote: So from my point of view of this movie, it seems to be not that bad. Watching it as a kid, felt gigantic, but now as a 17 year old it's a lot different. The idea of Ash Ketchum being the "Chosen One" is a bit cliched mostly because he's the main character in the show. But we don't get an explanation as to why he's the "Chosen One". Other than a non-explaining script, the rest of the movie not bad. The animation is very detailed and extraordinary, and the music is beautiful and adds a very ancient feel to it. But i have no idea why Weird Al was in this to sing in the end credits.0_oThe one thing that kinda bothers me most is Misty. The fact that she is making her crush on Ash very obvious. If you like someone and you don't want to look jealous, DON'T SHOW IT. Another thing that bothers me is the use of the character Melody. The idea of her being put to the side and only being a plot convenience kinda saddens me. The could of at least made her look important to the story other than playing music. But putting the bad things aside, this is still a good movie. Great music (aside from Weird Al), great animation and a great Nostalgic feel every time i'll watch it. Hears to 20 years of Pokemon!

Chris H (kr) wrote: While this film is extremely flawed, it has a certain charm to it. The choice of Burt Reynolds as a Navajo is odd but the concept of making a Native American the hero is commendable. This is a lesser known film that fans of Spaghetti Westerns should enjoy!

Daniel K (br) wrote: 2.5: Fascinating story, especially since I've never seen it depicted in its entirety on screen before. Or at least, this portion and version of the story. What makes it even more incredible is that this was released in 1944. Talk about a timely historical period picture; it was actually wartime motivational propaganda. The depiction of the Chinese is quite ridiculous of course and rather amusing given the current state of geopolitical affairs, although these Chinese aren't supposed to be bloody Commies. The production values are quite impressive, but I'm sure it didn't hurt that the filmmakers had the full cooperation of the US military, which was in rare form at this time in its history. I've seen snippets of this story before (such as in the last act of Michael Bay's recent propaganda piece Pearl Harbor), but never the whole thing from start to finish. It is pretty true to its title as well. This entire journey was really undertaken for 30 seconds over Tokyo. Solid performances and script as well. I can relate to it in a way being an AF guy currently deployed to a largely Navy outfit. The melodrama and romance towards the end didn't quite win me over though.

Chris A (nl) wrote: As he did with Fort Apache, John Ford proves here that black-and-white cinematography can be more vivid and beautiful than any color film when in the right hands. This film is just gorgeous. The score is haunting, the cinematography is incredible, and the performances from everyone are wonderful. I LOVED this film. The sense of place is staggering on the ship, and the high contrast black-and-white visuals combined with the beautifully moody score bring the feelings of isolation in the characters to the forefront. For someone who who loves the John Ford Stock Company as much as I do, this film is a gift. You've got Duke, Ward Bond, John Qualen, Thomas Mitchell, and Barry Fitzgerald stuck on a ship together for most of the film with John Ford at the helm. It's as awesome as it sounds.

Ellen T (br) wrote: Well done, except for the green boots that the heroine wears.

Cody C (br) wrote: Better than it gets credit for. Does some incredible stuff with rain and searchlights. Is engaging. Is it great? Fuck no. But it's good.

Carlos I (fr) wrote: Fun, but totally scattershot movie. If you like 80s cheese or those old role playing games, you should have some fun.
