The Curiosity of Chance

The Curiosity of Chance

High school coming-of-age tale. It is the 1980's and new wave angst and gender-bending fashion are all the rage. Chance Marquis is the new kid at an American high school in Belgium and is a somewhat awkward teenager who is the target of the school bully. To deal with this dilemma, Chance turns to the opposite ends of the high school spectrum for help. On one end is the flamboyant drag queen and at the other end, the varsity jock.

Rex A (mx) wrote: An arresting picture of a financial criminal that dares to ask the right questions. It takes enormous risks in suggesting that Mark Dreier isn't a bad guy, just someone presented with an opportunity, and claiming that people presented with a similar opportunity would do the same thing. It pays off well.

Faley A (ca) wrote: Peter Weir is a genius director. He has his ow way of showing things. THis is one of the best romantic movies I have seen so far. A very good casting, superb romantic music made this a sensational one. Good movie, very very good, worth watching.

Pete M (de) wrote: Not great but not bad. Features the best worst line ever, "Are you seriously giving me shit when not one of you can tell me where my sister is?" Gleefully shit!!!!

Tyler B (br) wrote: Historically inaccurate with regards to the real American squadron. Another very cliche american glorified war film, but excellent acting on James Franco's part. I enjoyed the movie and it was a bit predictable, but it was inspiring and emotional which is what one looks for in a good war movie.

From the visuals to the characters to the story to the comedy to the surprisingly deep morality, this is a fantastic movie, even if you don't have any whippersnappers with you. Surprisingly touching, poignantly romantic (I know, it's about robots, have to see it to understand). Previously, the best Pixar movies had a razor-sharp verbal wit (Toy Story, The Incredibles) but Wall-E, having a pair of leads who hardly speak, resurrects the type of sweet characterizations and physical comedy found in the silent masterworks of Charlie Chaplin. While Iron Man may be the year's best entertainer so far, Wall-E spoke to me more, and was equally entertaining in it's own sweet way. And it is a visual feast. See it on the big screen. ***** (out of five)

Gimly M (mx) wrote: The first act is absolutely horribly edited, some of the worst professional work I've ever seen in that aspect. And it doesn't pick up massively afterwards. I'm glad Gridhouse Revival is a thing, but Dear God No! is not a great example of it. For the most part they embrace the deliberately terrible qualities and play the exploitation almost entirely for laughs (seriously there is a ten minute sequence with a trio of Nixon strippers) but there is a scene in the middle of pretty traumatising sexual violence, which is so drastically juxtaposed to the light-hearted attitude of the style that came before it and after that it's actually really uncomfortable. Not in an "Oh what a great movie, it made me feel something way." More of an "Ew I'm really not sure what inspired this choice stylistically, should I turn this off now?" way. But there's some humour, some bad gore and some Supernatural-Nazi jazz going on in there too, so if that's your sort of thing then I guess you could do worse than Dear God No!...If you tried really hard.
