John B (jp) wrote: The Swimmer is an extraordinary bit of a cinema that for some reason does not get a lot of airplay. Lancaster is at his best as a person who has conveniently forgotten about his recent past and interacts with those who love and hate him as he swims through suburban pools on his way home. Gripping.

Alice S (gb) wrote: Its a shame this movie didn't hit it big. Definitely a hidden jewel among romance cinema. This is just one of those movies. Some of us can agree it is like a classic How Harry Met Sally. Super cute and funny with a good old 90's feel to it. The acting by Milla Jovovich was very good and believable. Some how a dorky Jewish man and a super sexy model type woman do make a very intriguing couple. Over-all a very cute movie. Milla should play more cute parts like these they suite her well. If you like chick flicks with some funny atmosphere and if you LOVE Milla definitely check this movie out.

Reece L (mx) wrote: Peking Opera Blues is, for all intents and purposes, a Shakespearian farce set in early-20th century Japan. In fact, with all of the gender-bending and with so much of the story taking place on/revolving around an actual stage, it's shocking that it isn't an adaptation of one of Shakespeare's works. The comedy also works in the vein of a Shakespearean play, silly slapstick and absurd coincidences generating a majority of the laughs, though there's an emphasis on choreography and action that make it something of its own. Though the tone is ridiculously campy, this is by no means a brainless film; there's quite a bit of commentary on the performance of gender and the ways in which women have to stand up to institutionalized forms of oppression. The direction is also worth mentioning, the intricately composed visual flourishes signaling that Tsui has a masterful grasp on how to put this kind of work together .
