Matt S (ru) wrote: An absolute classic of 90's queer cinema. A family is torn apart when their 7-year-old son Ludovic falls in love with the boy next door and declares that God made a "scientific error" when he was born a boy instead of a girl. There is an interesting shift between the reaction of his parents. His father is initially the one who is upset by his son dressing up in girls clothing and trying to kiss the neighbor boy, but the mother is the one who slowly shifts into the unaccepting role once it effects her on a material & social level.Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Golden Globe in 1997, this is yet another story you would never see in an American film. The children are treated with such grace and tenderness and the young actors relay strong performances in a story that they might not even have fully been able to emotionally grasp.
Matthew L (ca) wrote: A beautifully shot modern day western, that presents a very real hypothesis of Native Americans still living in the wilderness of Montana's Oxbow Quadrangle. The overall plot is a little thin and only just sustains its running time and for the most part seems content to hold its hands up at early settlers treatment of Native Americans. Berenger and Hershey work well together and have genuine chemistry. A good film for lazy Sunday afternoons.
Edgar C (de) wrote: Morricone is a true hero of music composition (ask Tarantino and his continuous tradition of ripping off world stuff) and his flawless creation exalts the status of this magnificent masterpiece by the underrated Taviani brothers. Accurate, passionate and incredible performances by an equally underrated Italian cast except for the already loved Mastroianni, all of them impersonating men of idealistic bravura and unavoidable melancholy of the past. Pitch-perfect cinematography and ironies throughout in a movie set in uproarious political times. Oliver N (gb) wrote: When compared to the likes of Hunger Games, it fails in beating it. However, next to pretty much every other current franchise it is a major success. For starters, an interesting adaptation of the novel and event acting certainly guide the plot in the right direction. It never seems to lose pace, although towards the end starts to become a little dry; in the sense that the director didn't seem to quite know what to do next. The sequel doesn't even compare to this.Verdict: B
