Thomas D (gb) wrote: The 1970s was a period in film that produced many timeless masterpieces, such as The Godfather, A Clockwork Orange, Apocalypse Now, and of course, Taxi Driver. All of these films have something similar, as they delve into the deepest recesses of the human mind, and explore what makes people who they are and why they do what they do. In Taxi Driver, we learn that the main character, Travis Bickle, is a Vietnam veteran who served in the marine corps during the war. The movie starts off with him getting a job as a nighttime taxi driver in New York city, and his reasoning is that he drives around aimlessly at night anyways due to insomnia. Travis lives a lonely life, interacting with no one except himself. It's quickly learned that he has strong opinions about other people, mainly due to his job. He sees the worst parts of New York, and drives around some disturbing people. He constantly monologues how much he hates the "scum" of the city. After a failed romantic attempt with his seemingly only hope to get something new, his mind begins deteriorating more and more due to isolation and the lowlifes that come out at night. He then gets it into his mind that he has to save a twelve year old girl who's part of a prostitute ring, as he'd be doing something good while getting rid of the scum, and hopefully himself in the process. This movie really goes into the problems of society, and how it can affect people that are already mentally unstable. It brings you on a journey that leaves you feeling just as lonely and disturbed as Travis Bickle was during the film.
