Pradyut V (es) wrote: black magic...phew...u wud think an exciting movie is in store...and what u get in return is a dumbed down version of black magic frm a has-been director...who sandwiches some excellent performances between uninspiring and poor acts. Phoonk is a return of the mercurial RGV to the horror genre wherein he makes a feeble attempt to recreate the aura of his 90's horror flicks. He fails to do so as he is let down by a string of average to poor performances by his lead cast. Noteworthy of the film is its technical brilliance and the cameraman wil simply blow u out with his handling of the lens but apart from that the film falls short of most expectations( if anyone had any !!! since this must be RGV's 1000th flop)

Ashley H (br) wrote: Cave of Outlaws is a decent film. It is about Pete Carver who has spent 10 years in jail for participating in a train holdup and goes to find the loot after being released. Macdonald Carey and Alexis Smith give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. William Castle did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the action and adventure.

Allan C (ag) wrote: One of my favorite Preston Sturges comedies. Eddie Bracken (who modern audiences might recognize as Roy Walley from "Vacation") is discharged from the Marines during WWII and is reluctant to return home when he meets up with a group of Marine who reluctantly convince him to fabricate a story about him being a war hero. Events steamroll into him getting a hero's welcome and being conscripted into running for mayor. It's a funny story that I've always felt could easily be updated for today. Bracken is great as he tries to find a way out of his lie. William Demarest has his best roles as a crusty Marine sergeant. And if you think about the message of the film, it's actually a pretty subversive satire to come our during the middle of a war, when it calls into question mindless hero-worship and blind patriotism during wartime. Regardless of your politics though, it's a terrific comedy and a classic screwball comedy with Sturges' unique voice.

Riley E (nl) wrote: Overall, Palo Alto was trying a little too hard to be indie and misunderstood, to the point of - at times - dipping into the dangerous terrority of accidental self parody. It stayed well within the lines of your classic teen film festival movie, and didn't really expand upon or innovate the genre in any way. That being said, the performances were overall convincing, and the storyline was executed well enough to keep audiences interested. Three stars for a movie that I wanted to like oh so much more than I actually did.
