Daniel K (it) wrote: 3: My kind of film. It takes a truly specific and narrowly focused picture to successfully convey a universal message and that's exactly what the team of women filmmakers have done here. It made me think of an anti-Austen film in the end, but that's really over simplifying it. Alternatively, it could easily remind one of the Austen biopic "Miss Austen Regrets". Austen and the protagonist here made similar life choices and had somewhat similar careers, although a century and half a globe apart. It's a very compelling story set in a time and place that I'm sure will always fascinate me. Great casting and great performances. Judy Davis is absolutely superb as I think she's been in everything I've seen her in. It hits all the right genre notes, but then veers off in another direction in the end. It makes it a much more powerful and complex film, even if it will undoubtedly disappoint some viewers at first.

Amanda R (ru) wrote: There was a severely low budget on this film, it was produced partly out of Day's pocket, and it shows. Uneven editing, a lacking script and an indifference to Doris Day made this a bit of a snore..

Kevin N (au) wrote: This is the marriage of an actress and a director who helped define the silent screen and weren't quite ready to surrender themselves to the limitations of sound film structure. It isn't as strong as some of their other collaborations, but it does work as a quiet meditation on the illusion of love and the bizarre back and forth attract/repel nature of man and woman. A hollow Gary Cooper is overshadowed by a haunting Marlene Dietrich who works as both the siren and the victim of this tale, while von Sternberg showcases his uniquely masterful control of the camera and his skill in utilizing the things we can't see, the things that are just off screen- even the things that aren't even visible to begin with, but are suggested with sound motifs and faraway facial expressions.
