Professional daredevil and white-suited hero, The Great Leslie, convinces turn-of-the-century auto makers that a race from New York to Paris (westward across America, the Bering Straight and Russia) will help to promote automobile sales. Leslie's arch-rival, the mustached and black-attired Professor Fate vows to beat Leslie to the finish line in a car of Fate's own invention.

The story covers various characters including a woman-seducer (Tom Cruise), a troubled drug addict (Melora Waters), a shy cop (John C. Reilly) and a former kid prodigy (William H. Macy). The camera quickly pans between each of these characters telling all of their stories in peace-meal while minimally explaining how the other characters are related to each other. The film is filled with subliminal text, and hidden messages that include multiple references to Exodus 8:2, Magnolias pictures appearing in every location and musical interlude consistencies with characters. The movie is a masterpiece, and done in a similar vein to how Nashville was directed in the 70s. The movie is quite original, but the performance and direction of the film make it for quite a compelling watch.

I guess if you like to see Williams Shatner rapping it would be worth watching because he has this big number at the end. But there really is no point to the entire thing as I'm not sure any of the characters learn anything and life just apparently gets better for them. The sad part was I totally knew what the hell they were talking about when they were being all geektastic and I'm going to have to agree with the guys here, what the hell is your problem that you would actually WANT to watch a pan and scan version of something?

The immense wrong done to 4 young people at the height of their youth (impeccable Daniel Day Lewis as Gerry Conlon was one of them) was the incarceration plus Conlons father who must die in prison. If it was not the tenacity and resourcefulness of attorney Pierce(Emma Thompson), the utter shame and inhumanity of the crooked police would never have come to the light of day. Made in 1993, 22 years ago, one could sense that young Daniel Day Lewis would become a giant in the acting world as we witness today.

It's hard to properly appreciate the suitcase in Pulp Fiction or the box in Barton Fink without knowing about Kiss Me's "The Green Whatsit". In some other reality screenwriter A. I. Bezzerides adapted every Mike Hammer book and was never blacklisted as a victim of McCarthyism. Spillane hated this movie and hated Bezzerides for what he did to Hammer. All the more reason to love it. It's now part of the Criterion Collection and was selected in 1999 for preservation in the US National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

From a director who is not afraid to do away with the "happy ending" entirely, it was somewhat disappointing to see this story wrapped up so cleanly. It's unclear to what extent the film's faults lie with Brecht or with Lang. The directing is spot on as always--there are a few really beautiful cuts and overall the drama is quite engaging. Unfortunately, the film amounts to little more than propaganda in the final analysis. And even though the circumstances of the time may justify it being propaganda, it's still propaganda.

It's good fun, and a fitting revenge for Deighton's From Russia With Love script going largely unused. Ed Begley Sr. gives General Jack D. Ripper a run for his money as he plays his son's worst nightmare - a right-wing Texan oil billionaire who wants to start a war because he knows God to be on his side. This was an implausible, comic scenario in 1967. Not peak-Russell insanity, but an enjoyable farce with a nice score and funny references.
