Andrew L (ca) wrote: Terrible and boring. Norton is not a good actor (his performances in every film he's done are the same), Ralph Fiennes and Hopkins are completely over the top in their roles. Nowhere near as good as 'Manhunter'

Patrik T (ru) wrote: Excellent film based on an excellent book. And with a story and a message 10 times more vital and interesting than that of Matrix, which has a similar concept. This one ought to be compulsory in school.

The Soldier Blue influence is as evident as I'd read, though here it is more explicit about the on screen bloodletting than having characters spell out its thematic importance. It has a polished look, and is interesting in contrast to earlier genre efforts of this type as well as for being an unusual effort for these directors.

Grant S (gb) wrote: Good western, but fairly disappointing. I've been looking forward to watching Shane all my life. It is one of those movies which are now part of cinematic mythology and folklore. It is referred to in songs (Roger Waters' 1980s track "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking" springs immediately to mind). Thus, now that I finally managed to see it, it is disappointing to discover that it is far from brilliant. Don't get me wrong - it's a fairly good movie - but its is not a masterpiece. Slow moving, overly goody two-shoesy hero and plot, too clear-cut good vs evil theme, a weakish performance in the lead role and another performance that is one of the worst in cinema history. (Yep, I'm referring to the kid with the bad haircut. Incredibly annoying.)This said, setting and cinematography are fantastic, action scenes are good, and the plot is pretty good, despite the slow development. Not the classic I was hoping for, but it'll do.
