(au) wrote: A relatively good Nordic black comedy with a solid if not spectacular turn by the always watchable Stellan Skarsgard. Skarsgard here plays snow plough business owner and local citizen of the year, Nils, who soon turns hardened avenging angel after the murder of his son by local gangsters. What starts as a pretty sound premise with a good, almost gripping set up, soon gives way however via jarring narrative leaps and almost incredulous behaviour by some of the lead characters. On one occasion it actually took me out of the film completely. I mean, just what is up with Nil's wife? These flaws jar against a talented cast working hard to catch that light footed vibe of violence and fun that say an early Guy Ritchie caper had. Although it captures Guy's love of a good gory scene, the script, with some excellent exceptions, lacks the snappiness and edge to bring it really to life on the screen. The one exception is the character Greven, Godfather to the motley Norwegian crew of would be crime lords. Performed by Pl Sverre Valheim Hagen, this chaotic, borderline psychotic but very charming man lights up the movie in every scene he is in. On at least two occasions he had me laughing out loud when I guess in a normal moral universe I should actually have been horrified by what he was up to. Beautifully filmed and hauntingly sound tracked, Kraftidioten does succeed brilliantly in evoking the immense nature, sense of isolation and sheer beauty of a Norwegian winter. The wide shots almost evoke a western feeling as Nils in his snow plough is made to embody the lone cowboy cleaning out the town of undesirables in a snowy wilderness outpost. This along with a genuine sense of attachment to Nil's plight and quest it all adds up to just enough to keep Kraftdioten on the rails. Overall, Kraftidion is well worth a look, but this is no Nordic noir classic.

We talked about the slutty ones, the pregnant ones... but they had their own friends and they never were so sensitive about who they were. Emily Osment's character is WAY too concerned with what people think, even for high school. No one actually cares that much. This film was way too exaggerated and not accurate at all, but i kinda get where its coming from. Kids are stupid about what they put online. There are truer ways to address it though.

(ag) wrote: I'm split on the debut film of Stillman. I'll start with the good. It seemed like an accurate satirical view of the upper class of New York. With there socialist beliefs and there unhappiness in their successes and inheritances. It had a fun script with intellectual jokes. On the bad side in the three years of portrayal the characters didn't change at all. Physically or mentally. Not even a haircut. If Stillman wanted to be lazy he could've set this over one night. That would also take away from the other con of the relationships between characters were confusing and indifferent.
