Talon B (us) wrote: Plot and honest character development are tossed to the wayside in this low-budget attempt at playing Alejandro Jodorowsky or Harmony Korine while failing miserably at actually succeeding. Director Gregory Hatanaka shines as a perfect example of a filmmaker without his own vision, a sad knack for poorly embellishing popular trends, and a hack storyteller who somehow gets lost in his own yawn of a yarn. Amazingly, with all the raw meat, bloodshed, incest, religious dogma, and nightmarescapes, it wasn't even weird enough to be captivating...or interesting. Somewhere around the middle of the 2nd act it does, however, become pretty clear this is nothing but cinematic masturbation from a porn-grade director who fails at even delivering a decent money-shot, i.e., a satisfying or even clever climax.

Jim M (au) wrote: Half-assed retelling of the story of Jesse James with a bunch of pretty boys. Still, if you don't expect too much its not a bad way to kill 90 minutes. Though in all honesty Young Gun 1&2 are much more entertaining, and The Long Riders is a better take on Jesse James. UPDATE Hmmm 2 things occure to me. The Indian Comanche Tom is probably the most interesting of the gang so of course we rarely see him. 2) Playing up the pretty boy Robin Hood angle of Jesse James, a man who was a bandit and Confederate hold out (the movie mentions he rode with William Quantrell. Jesse James did ride with Quantrills Raiders, and took part in the massacre at Lawrence, Kansas) is analgous to making a hero out of a Nazi SS holdout in Germany circa 1945.

christine m (fr) wrote: More or less remake of Jack the Ripper film Lodger (1944), with Laird Cregar as another serial killer terrorising Victorian London, George Sanders as hero and Linda Darnell replacing Merle Oberon as the can can dancing beauty (although villainess in this movie). Suffering from insanity, rather fleshy Mr Bone goes around killing people from left and right, but hey, this is 1945, so not his mental illness nor his weight are exploited as sewer of filth-and-gore fantasies. Wellmade Gothic triller, just too bad it was not filmed in color to showcase those stylish costumes and sets! Shown in Finland as "Pimeyden tullen", "When the darkness falls".
