Seth S (fr) wrote: This is one of those guilty pleasure movies for me. And while I like it, it's not really something I would recommend you make a point to see. It is filled with every cliche in the book, the performances are sometimes uninspired, and the direction by Justin Lin looks like a work in progress. Even with all these problems, I don't really care. We all have those movies that no one else likes, but for some reason, we like them. This is one of those movies for me. Through persistence, Jake Huard is accepted to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Jake is a loner who thinks he can "will" his way through Annapolis. But like anybody else, Jake has his problems. He will either need to seek help, or wash out from the school. Determined to make his life miserable is Lt. Cole, Jake's commanding officer. With some experience in boxing, Jake enters into the Brigade Championships. He will box against the best fighters in the Navy, including Lt. Cole. James Franco gives a solid performance as Jake, even if he is characteristically spaced out at times. But Jake is a character that would rather help himself than trust others, so Franco's performance a good one. Tyrese Gibson is your obligatory, hard-nosed drill instructor. The character is nothing new, much like Gibson's performance. It is what it is, exactly what you would expect. Jordana Brewster plays Ali, who is the necessary love interest, and of course she is one of Jake's instructors. She exists in the movie to be the love interest and to be the person Jake turns to for help. While we have seen the character many times before, Brewster's performance is surprisingly good. I hope she gets more roles in the future, outside of the Fast and the Furious franchise. Annapolis falls squarely into the "guilty pleasure" category. It seems at times like Justin Lin's audition for taking over the Fast and the Furious series, with "Fast" regulars Gibson and Brewster starring in this movie. It is very similar to Top Gun, but I would much rather watch this movie. And while Annapolis has many faults, I still enjoyed it. "If Mississippi quits, then all of a sudden Arkansas is the worst state in the whole country." 7/10
