We are invited to follow reality TV star SJ - the inspirational female lead, on an epic fight for survival in a dystopian presentation of our present-day world. The Lost Generation exists in a world governed by a corrupt media who have the police and government in their pocket. Able to scandalize the government through mass surveillance, the media creates propaganda on how to live a life - and leaves desperate civilians in its wake. But there is hope. It's not the most original thing -- as it has been done before -- but the style in which it is filmed is beautiful. For a single-take movie, the pacing of it undoubtedly suffers. We get every pause that would happen in a real life horror film, we might not be able to see things as clearly if it were shot in the format of a regular movie, and some angles that would have helped the movie's tension were lost. But we do get an experimental film that knows its limits but embraces its strength, which is the single take.Gustavo Hernndez is a capable director, as evidenced by this film (Ti West supporters would love his directorial vision). He has the same lingering shots that Ti West has, and is able to do a lot with a limited budget and a handheld. He knows how to frame a shot, when to keep it close to his actors and when to give them space and let the picture breathe. However, much like the problem with West's films, the writing is bad.The Silent House is a great tension builder. There are several scenes in which the suspense and atmosphere of the film is tangible, like when Laura must navigate through the dark using a Polaroid camera. But after it gets to the last 20 minutes, The Silent House tries to be more than what it should be. It wants to be a mind bending film, in addition to it being a visual splendor, but it doesn't need to be -- nor is it.The ending ultimately ruins the status of the film, and I'm sure that's what hurt the remake released earlier this year. Although the actors are pretty convincing, and the direction is spot on, the story seriously cripples the credulity of the film. 4.5/10*POSSIBLE SPOILER* The ending is reminiscent of a french horror flick released about 10 years ago, but unlike that film there isn't much action in here.

It's not side-splitting funny but that's because it's so real and it will hurt close to home for a lot of people...especially those 10% unemployed. Although it's "real", it's still enjoyable and has some funny moments, it's not a depressing film by any stretch. If you've run a business that's closed and had to go look for a job...THIS MOVIE IS A MUST-SEE.

Bill B (au) wrote: Gave Takashi Miike's film a wild hair re-watch recently and I must say that it holds up as well as I remembered, with the oddball sensibilities of family loyalty and pride in bizarre display, as one of the most dysfunctional family I've ever seen in film eventually bands together to stand as a unit against outside forces, which is not where you expect the plot to go when the film opens with an incestuous liaison between the father and estranged daughter.Well worth another look, Miike was really firing on all cylinders in the early 2000s.

There are some really offensive things in here (a student is killed by police; a teacher takes a student who is pregnant by another teacher to get an abortion), but there is an incredible message developing around it all. As a high school teacher, I saw a lot of things that seemed all-too familiar, and a lot of things that were way off base for the sake of art. See this if you like dark comedy and can see beyond the surface events in a film to grasp its whole message. There is some witty comedy that anyone who has been to high school will appreciate, and some that high school teachers especially will love.

Maximillian Schell is asked to put a group of experts together to steal some valuable gemstones from a museum in Turkey. He instead puts together a collection of novices. Luckily the film doesn't take itself too seriously and everyone seems to be having a good time. Though fun and influential, I can't help thinking that the film misses something that could have made it better. Perhaps the quirkiness feels a bit dated by now.
