What follows are an array of grating, overlong scenes and a plot that eventually winds out of control. Despite these shortcomings, Madhouse boasts some alarming set pieces, strong central performances, impressive cinematography, suspenseful moments and an unexpectedly potent sense of elegance. Although it doesn't always hit the right spot, when it does...It really does. Well worth a watch for horror fans!

There are some fun homages to classic horror in play, but what starts as an homage devolves into cliche, with some truly terrible acting. I keep wondering if I simply missed something and it really was the smart, classic-inspired piece others saw, or if, as I suspect, it just fell flat. But I don't think I'll be watching it again to find out.
