The gritty, dark and moody universe we're introduced in is so immersive we can barely dig out of it by the end of the movie. This is a visual spectacle, complemented by great action sequences as well as many outstanding performances. The stories keep their horror-esque feel all the way through. The music seals the unsettling atmosphere which further makes you interested in the world. It's not so much the stories which attract me so much,it's the breathing and living universe of sin and rotting moral we're thrown in,that really made invested. Movie offers a great deal of parallels which can be associated with the real world. The politics, corrupted by greed and power ignores any or all of the citizen needs,in favor of their own prosperity. The gang background is the most obvious representation of the real world,as you wouldn't need to go far to encounter a real-life establishment like this.

Ned Beatty gives a great performance as the Irish charmer and plays the role with the robust presence of a man who, finding himself on a stage, would know exactly what to do there. Cinematographer Sue Gibson works magic with the Irish countryside whilst director Chelsom shows no mercy in dishing out the blarney, much the way the returned Locke sings "Come Back to Sorrento" and "Goodbye" to the teary crowd at Micky's nightclub (Beatty expertly lipsyncs the vocals of Vernon Midgley).
Dann M (nl) wrote: A comedy that's out of this world, My Stepmother Is an Alien is an '80s cult classic. The story follows a scientist named Steven Mills who falls for an eccentric woman who's fascinated by his work at an astrological research center, but his daughter suspects that there's something not quite right about her. Starring Dan Aykroyd, Kim Basinger, Jon Lovitz, and Alyson Hannigan, the cast is quite impressive and does a good job at delivering the comedy; which is mostly a bunch of slapstick routines and fish-out-of-water jokes. And although the comedy may seem a bit rote, there's a certain sort of charm to it. My Stepmother Is an Alien is a little silly and formulaic, but it's also kind of fun.

Justin A (fr) wrote: One of the classic 1950s horror/sci-fi films. It doesn't quite reach the level of movies like The Blob, The Fly, The Day the Earth Stood Still, or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but this is still one of the more fun and entertaining movies of the genre from that time period. It's a bit too nuclear paranoia heavy, being a very blunt movie instead of just hinting at potential war and nuclear fallout that was present in a lot of movies at the time. It also walks a fine line between being MST3K fodder and a true classic because it is so generic and corny at times. Still, the plot unravels at a good pace, similar to a lot of the classic horror movies, and the monsters are memorable and the stop motion is great. There is also a decent amount of blood for the time. A must-see for fans of these kinds of movies. You should know if you'll like this movie or not.

This sets the wheels in motion and the screws gradually tighten on Payne in true noir style. Turns out the other guy is a diamond thief who has trouble with his fence and the fence's tough guy assistant (played by noir stalwart Jack Lambert) over Payne's wife's involvement in the heist. When she turns up dead, the cops come looking for Payne. After having reality literally ripped away from him in one crazy scene, he has to use his knuckles to fight his way to the truth. Director Phil Karlson knows his noir sets (see also Dark Alibi, Kansas City Confidential, or The Phenix City Story) and he lays them all out for us here (late night drug store, boxing ring, all-night caf, waterfront, expensive upper class apartment, neon lit or darkened streets of New York, and unusually the Broadway footlights). Perhaps there isn't as much a sense of dread as in other 1950s noirs and perhaps Payne is a little too wooden in the lead but for solid genre fare, look no further.
