Andrew F (ca) wrote: An energetic German vampire flick. Thanks to the Twilight garbage, vampire films are now a dime-a-dozen. This had great potential, but misfired on several levels. It IS a definite see (if into the genre), but I don't recommend a purchase. This is a must rent.
Johnny T (mx) wrote: If there's a part of this film you can't predict three scenes before it happens, you need to go to remedial film school and rent a few of the teaching-underdogs classics. Despite treading familiar territory and presenting some hokey moments, The Ron Clark Story is a solid entry in the "against all odds" genre, and even has a few moments to tug at the heart strings of even the most cynical viewers. The DVD presentation is very good, with a handful of extras about the true story that somehow managed to be more schmaltzy than the fictional version. Fans of flicks like Stand and Deliver, looking for a film safe for the family, could do worse than giving this movie a spin. VERDICT: "Full Price" - My second highest rating (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
Carlos M (jp) wrote: It is always interesting to see Hou put together in the same film three stories that feel like a culmination of the main themes found in his work along so many years, even though the third leaves a lot to be desired and I find too distracting the fact that the second one is silent.

John B (ca) wrote: Shades of the later Tristram Shandy and earlier Truffaut films, we have the story of a film within a film and all the drama that occurs outside of where the camera is shooting. While good at times, it often feels lost.

Allan C (us) wrote: MGMHD is mining their library of 80s cheese again and I, of course, can't help but watch. I also have to say I have a new respect for Josh Brolin as a result of his skateboarding skills in this film. "No Country for Old Men" would definitely been helped if the Coen Brothers let Brolin skate a little. But to the film at hand, it's essentially "West Side Story" on skateboards, which was really just "Romeo & Juliet" with show tunes. There are also subplots about rival skate gang leaders wanting to go pro and also a climactic skate competition. It's a pretty weak movie, but the novelty of Brolin, now a well established actor, in a super cheesy 80s teen movie goes a long way. You also have a pre-Twin Peaks Sherilyn Fenn as a tough skater girl named Velvet, sporting some huge hair and wildly over-the-top make-up. The Red Hot Chili Peppers also show up to play in one club scene and you also get a few famous skateboards of the day, including Tony Hawk. Don't watch this if you're wanting an quality movie. Just watch this if you want some nostalgia or ironic entertainment. One interesting bit of trivia, Catherine Hardwicke did the production design on this film, who would years later later go on to direct "The Lords of Dogtown."
