Manny C (fr) wrote: Two editions of this riveting, firecracker film from John Woo exist, but it's the out-of-print Criterion DVD that you want. It's the only copy of this Hong Kong dazzler that delivers rich sound and color. Hong Kong star Chow Yun-Fat is the cop out for vengeance against the Triad that killed his partner. When one of the thugs (a terrific Tony Leung) turns out to be an undercover police officer, that's when the signature Woo action thrills kick in. It all comes down to that climactic shootout set in a hospital that will have your pulse pounding like crazy, and Criterion does not disappoint. If you happen to be so lucky to have the Criterion DVD, check the student film from a then-amatuer Woo that shows you a master in the act of inventing his own balletic style of action and violence.

When an older, unhappily married man sits with the girl one night, the conman talks her into squeezing the guy for money. The older man starts falling in love with the girl and the relationship gets serious, including the old man getting her a new apartment and paying her rent. Eventually the old man starts talking about getting a divorce and the conman and girl get squeezed."You wouldn't know love if it hit you in the face.""If that's where it hit you, you ought to know."Fritz Lang, director of M, Metropolis, Fury, The Treatment of Dr. Mabuse, The Tomb of Love, The Big Heat, Clash by Night, and Cloak and Dagger, delivers Scarlet Street. The storyline for this picture is very compelling and well told. The pace is well done and I loved how the entire film unfolds. The cast delivers perfect performances and includes Edward Robinson, Dana Duryea, Joan Bennett, and Margaret Lindsay."If I had any sense, I'd walk out on you.""You haven't got any sense."This was one of the first films I added to my Netflix wish list and this was worth the wait. The film was amazing and entertaining and extremely well done. I loved the characters and how the film unfolds. I thought this was a very underrated classic film that is a must see."You can't keep a good woman waiting."Grade: A
