Allan C (gb) wrote: Martin Ritt directs Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier as jazz musician American ex-pats living in Paris. How could a film with that set-up not be great! Newman and Poitier fall for the pretty tourists Joanne Woodward and Diahann Carroll. Take all that and add in an amazing Duke Ellington score and you've got an incredibly cool film.
Paul D (gb) wrote: Not a great film, as ever the script is a total let down and Van Damme is not the hero, but just for that it has some cult value.
Allan C (ag) wrote: I actually still have my Freddy's Dead 3D glasses from when I originally watched this film in the theater ("House Party 2" ads and all). I remember not liking this film all that much when I originally saw it and it really hasn't improved all that much with age. This entry features deadly Q-tips, scary road maps, frighteningly loud hearing aids, getting trapped inside video games, Freddy cutting your parachute, and so on. Oh, you also get to see someone using kickboxing on Freddy. Generally speaking, this film really lost it's way in terms of what's actually scary and instead focused on being funny and coming up with creative deaths and dream sequences. Freddy doesn't even kill anyone with is metal claws! Director Rachel Talalay directs the film with competence and the film does have decent production value. You also get Yaphet Kotto in a supporting role and funny cameos by Elinor Donahue, Tom Arnold & Rosanne Barr, Johnny Depp, and Alice Cooper as Freddy's abusive father. Overall, this is a pretty weak entry in the Nightmare series, though I'll still say this series is generally better than most horror franchises of this era.
Van R (fr) wrote: This true-life account of a Kenya game warden's wife, Joy Adamson (Virginia McKenna), who raises three female lion cubs after their mother and father are shot is endearing. The game warden, George Adamson (Bill Travers), is dispatched to kill a man-eating lion. No sooner has he killed the murderous lion than a lioness attacks them and he is forced to bring it down, too. Too late they discover that the lioness was only protecting her three cute cubs. George and Joy rear the three cubs and eventually give them to a zoo, but Joy is too grief-stricken by their obligation to watch her husband put them on an airplane. It seems that Joy grew quite attached to one of the lion cubs, Elsa, enough so that George keeps her for Joy. They make a docile pet out of Elsa and the young lioness has a free run of the compound. Things get complicated when Elsa incites a herd of elephants to stampede through a village and the game warden supervises George demands that they ship Elsa off to a zoo. Naturally, Joy opposes this plan and she works hard to return Elsa to the wild where she was born free. Along the way, George suffers from a bout with malaria, but he survives and helps Joy ensure that Elsa makes it in the wild. Composer John Barry, who rose to fame and fortune with his orchestral scores to the James Bond film franchise, received an Oscar for his soundtrack as well as the title tune. Director James Hill received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Director.
