(it) wrote: an excellent film! the dialogue given to Solal is amazing! his character presents all kinds of questions about the nature of attraction, that nature ends up being what destroys him and Ariane. Moreover, you never can tell weather he is ever fully sane or not. Ariane has issues of her own and her lies spark an ending that still has me scratching my head. Not in confusion of the plot, but of her actions. What she does at the end of the film makes you wonder, did she go to far to keep such a broken, soulless man? I waited two years for this preference and it was well worth the wait! X

(es) wrote: One of the finest films by the legendary Taiwanese director, Hou Hsiou Hsien. A superbly crafted crime drama shot in Taipei that tells it's story and creates tension using mostly mood and setting better than any other film of it's era. Hard to find in the US on DVD. Worth the hunt.

(ca) wrote: A supprisingly delightful melodrama which has a little more substance than other 50's romances, the majority of the cast give a good performance, Clifton Webb plays the pompus clueless writer well; its basically an old fashioned romance. Three women living in Rome drop coins into the mystical trevi fountain and gradually romance blossoms infront of their eyes. Some of the dialogue is a little mondane and fake and so loses focus and interest.
