There's entirely too much intra-house public school politics that I can't and don't care to follow, but there's also a sensitivity and understanding of the repressive and backwards atmosphere in these bastions of "tradition" (a microcasm of 1930s backwards/repressive/imperiallist British society) that led these outsiders to defect/turn Communist spies.
