The Road

The Road

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind and water. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the warmer south, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there.

After a global cataclysm has caused an extinction event, an ailing father defends his son as they wander through the post-apocalyptic world, trying to keep the dream of civilization alive and avoid roving gangs of savage humans who will turn them into slaves, or worse. . Hailie F (fr) wrote: This movie just absolutely sucked. The ending was anti-climatic and the acting was just plain boring. Never again will I watch something so outrageously terrible.

Josh S (au) wrote: Wonderful music, very immersive, lets you into the emotional life of a poor family in China. Shows you how China's decisions affect people on a grand scale but I really liked that they brought you close up to one girl and her family. Seeing how the tour boats work (when the girl has to go work on one) was fascinating.

Cassandra M (ag) wrote: Bizarre but amusing splatter film. Empire called it "the best British gore film since Hellraiser". With praise like that it was bound to disappoint some. Cradle of fear is a low-budget horror anthology. Whether you will enjoy the film will depend on whether you can get past the low-budget video look, several bad acting and the at times laughable effects. However, overall the most surprising thing about this film is how bad it is but good. The gore is excellent and some off the effects are very good though at times the over the top nature off the violence is at odds with the tone off the film. This however is not his masterpiece.

Alun W (es) wrote: This is a wonderful film. The low budget and the technical limitations of the period mean that the director was forced to rely on the strength of his script and cast instead of the special effects that would probably ruin any remake. This is a very intimate apocalypse, and the dialog sizzles even more than the weather as the earth spirals towards the sun. The tension between the Edward Judd and Leo McKern is very well done, as is the developing relationship between Judd and Munro. The film is dated of course, but there are ample compensations: the theme chimes well with present day concerns over climate change, and I loved the period detail, with much of the film appearing to have been shot in the Daily Express building, and there are plenty of outdoor scenes with a lot of visual interest too (such as shots of Battersea Park and the power station). The DVD has a 15 certificate, and it probably still deserves it, as the dialog is unusually frank for the period, and we see as much of Janet Munro as the director could possibly have hoped to sneak past the censors at the time. Yes, some of the minor characters are a bit one dimensional, and the themes of official complacency and cover-up are common currency now, but this film has a wonderful freshness and deserves to be better known.
