Their frequent employer Jim (Chill Wills), who always gets the better of them, talks them into taking a nondescript horse in lieu of some of their wages. While LaBute takes a lot from The Coen Brothers (determinism, shades of existential violence, a dash of film noir) and David Lynch (the collision of fantasy and reality) which cements his role as opportunist rather than auteur, "Nurse Betty" remains fresh, vibrant and funny. The film incredibly manages to balance three completely different avenues and makes them cohesive. You have hit men Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock in one section, the psychotically broken Betty and her adventures in Los Angeles in another and then characters from small town Kansas rounding things out. The film manages to find a way to intertwine these aspects in a satisfying and intriguing way, always remembering the the truth behind this wacky scenario. "Nurse Betty" shouldn't work, it should have been a massive, convoluted mess. But it's not. It's an incredibly sly, biting and extremely heartfelt picture with a dynamite Renee Zellweger at it's center.

This is a really good overlooked con movie, think of con movies like Oceans 11 and such, it is not as good, but it is a must see if you like this type of movie. And if nothing else, you get to see a young Heather Graham, so that is worth a couple stars in itself.

It was kind of jarring, considering that it seems like a movie needs to be based on SOMETHING (Book, another movie, old TV show, video game...board game, nostalgic childhood candy, etc) and Another Earth reminded me of how much life a film can have when its untethered from the world we know. Cahill does a fine job subverting the film's high concept and focusing on a tragic human drama between two broken people, and uses the sci fi premise to prod at deep philosophical and emotional truths. It's not entirely successful, as the film feels a little bit too melodramatic and loses momentum by the time the third act hits (though the conclusion was satisfying), but it was so nice to see such earnest filmmaking with such naked emotion. Brit Marling is excellent, and props to Cahill for helping William Mapother escape from the shadow of "Creepy Ethan" from Season 2 of "Lost." Even though I wasn't 100% on board with this one, it did make me excited to see Mike Cahill's follow-up--"I Origins"--and everything else he does in the future.
