I thought Laura Linney, Bill Murray in a unique performance, and a pivotal moment in history all under one roof would be great! Wrong! This film, though well crafted in its technical presentation, is flawed beyond repair in its characters, attitudes, message, and story. Now I know it's based on a true story so who can argue with history? Well some stories should not be told and this could be one of them. The movie pretty much declares that affairs are OK, that scandalous behavior, immoral conduct, and shameful secrets are all something worthwhile, completely acceptable, and charming when finally shared with the outside world. Yeah, not going to fly with me. I did enjoy the king and queen and their perception of America. I also did enjoy Murray's embodiment of Roosevelt, but most of the mood of the film, it's dialogue, and it's pacing were drawn out, led to nothing, and just filled with absurdities. I know Roosevelt and everyone around him were flawed. I know they did great things and made mistakes. I DO NOT need to be instructed to applaud the mistakes and relish history revealed. Who do you root for here, other than maybe the king? What man and woman wants to be like this - unfaithful, selfish, childish, seemingly spouting wisdom one minute and then turning a blind eye to it another. Who wants to be cheated on? Who desires to be second rate, to be thrown away, to be used? Letters and diaries were found belonging to Daisy and so a movie was made affirming this tragedy. I thought Linney would play Eleanor, I thought this would be about a marriage that supported a presidency. If that's not history then show me history through the lens of Truth, not through the lens of warped morality. Stay away from this movie. Don't let the elegant scenery, cinematography, production design, music, and costumes fool you. It becomes a bore at times, strange in places, not relatable in others, and downright false.

(kr) wrote: Theater kids rejoice. So this is about a musical theater camp and the process behind it all. You get to see kids putting in work at rehearsals, shining during the show, and all the drama that happens backstage as there are teenage hormones firing back and forth like a ping pong match. Now this was a movie that I was familiar with in name only, and the real reason that it was even on my radar was because I got married to a musical theater major. I watch any and everything, so you know that I dove headfirst into this teenage musical extravaganza, even though I very likely would have never watched this otherwise. The most notable thing that jumps out at you immediately is the quality. I'm not even commentating on if this is a bad movie or anything, but the sounds and video quality make it feel like you are watching this on early 90's VHS, even though it is a 2003 release streaming on Hulu. We had to eventually break down and turn on subtitles because characters were inaudible, even with the volume turned up to eleven. While these kids may not be the best of actors for the up close and personal silver screen, they aren't untalented, and they do show the promise of being able to do something big and loud like an off-Broadway musical. Camp's biggest claim to fame that is that this boasts the film debut of Anna Kendrick, and she is a frizzy haired teenager who wants to make it big, appropriately enough. It would be way too easy of a joke to call this movie campy, although that's exactly what it is. It's overdramatic, but at the same time, this is all too common a side effect whenever there is a theatrical show being put together. I did not have a bad time watching this, and I definitely have to say that this movie's heart is in the right place. The only real qualm I have this is that there is just no reason for this movie to be two hours long. Its earnestness can only take it so far, and I would have come out feeling more positively about it if it were cut to be in the 90 - 95 minute range. As it stands, it's a movie that will go largely unappreciated outside of the musical theater community.

This is a film that everyone should see in their lifetime!- Watched this again for the 2nd time within a year and with my 5yr old niece. Such a lovely film and looks stunning on Blu-Ray. Highly recommended!- This is one of Chaplin's masterpieces...Brando, Kubrick, Ebert, Scorsese all think this is Chaplin's best film, I tend to agree. I hadn't seen it in a long time and didn't remember it well, so it was nice to revisit it on Blu-ray, after it had a 4k digital restoration, it's hard to believe the film is over 80yrs old! The film contains one of my favourite Chaplin bits, which is his boxing match, it's hilarious, and was one of his own favourite scenes as well. If you've never seen this film, see k it our, it's a MUST watch!
(kr) wrote: Terrible. Terrible, like I can't even describe it. But some parts are comic in how bad they are, and its mercifully short. And Megan Fox is in it.
