Frank D (es) wrote: Typical Mel Brooks flick. The comedy was right out of his other films, little slap stick, little sarcasm, and no originality. Thought it had a good message, typical Hollywood ending. Was not really in the mood for that tonight tho. Thought it would have stood out of Mel Brooks cannon if he had given it a dark ending and stuck with "life stinks", or sucks.Molly, Lesley Ann Warren's character had a memorable quote... pun intended, that really struck a cord with me tonight"That what life is. Just a bunch of moments. Most of them are lousy, but once is a while you get a good one." Qua est meus Molly? I'm rumex EGO proditor vestri fides.
Russell S (gb) wrote: (55/100) All of Juzo Itami's movies I've seen after TAMPOPO have been a disappointment. I really don't understand how the same person made the film's credited to him--this despite the highly congruous casts and production sensibility. SUPERMARKET WOMAN is just shockingly bad--it looks like CLERKS shot by Japanese grandmothers. THE FUNERAL wasn't funny. A TAXING WOMAN is no exception to this group. It feels like a Japanese TV drama. In TAMPOPO the stereotypical "heroine with moxie" was just one of the many cardboard cut-outs Itami played with amusingly. In the "woman" movies, a more annoying version of this two-dimensional character is tasked with carrying the whole film upon its cellulose (celluloid?) shoulders. The result is something with visuals from the 80s but the characterization sensibility of a pre-talkie melodrama. The difference here, of course, is that Pauline doesn't get tied down to the railroad tracks by the criminals but, rather, tracks down the ties among the criminals. The melodramatic criminals, in fact, are the highlight of the movie right down to their dastardly eviction of a poor widow. Tsutomu Yamazaki's characterization of tax-cheat Hideki Gondo is fun to watch for a bit. The milquetoast good guys, on the other hand, are insufferable (well, the director of the ward tax office is not so bad...). Especially Gondo's son, who, at one point in his brief time on screen, makes that annoying high-pitched grunting obeisance that all children must be required by law to make in all modern Japanese motion pictures, showing that he is "naive" at heart and willing to conform to the expectations of the adult ministering to him. Cue fake smile using all the wrong facial muscles with chin-up bobble-heading. I'll probably watch MINBO (or the Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion) at some point since I have it waiting and because I'd like to see the movie that likely led to his "suicide". That will likely be my last Itami, however.
Ryan L (nl) wrote: This movie sucks ass from a monkey! Uwe Boll is the worst director ever! This movie has no originality! It's bland, boring, and unenjoyable! The ending makes no fucking sense! The fight scenes are hilariously bad though. I recommend the room because, that movie is hilarious for its acting and its subplots. I recommend you to not watch this cinematic garbage!
