Cheryl C (es) wrote: For me, the best thing about this sometimes too authentic teen story was Billy Campbell as arguably the best dad I've seen on screen in a while. The relationships between the characters as a whole were quite refreshing, and though the ending was a bit absurd, at least they cut it right to avoid being schmaltzy.

Matt M (ag) wrote: Set in a futuristic Shanghai, this film tells the cold thriller of a man and a woman who have violated Code 46, a clear genetic law which forbids incestuous relationships, whether on purpose or accidental. The film takes itself too seriously despite the fact that it is a mess of imperfection and the plot developments are much too hard to follow. It is the concept of the futuristic world that is compelling and original, with the particular mixture of languages spoken that seems like a wasted opportunity for the foundations of an interesting and original background cultural context.

Not being the biggest fan of Hammer, I always felt Amicus a more competent stable (neither really produced a film that was actually frightening, but they could be entertaining, and Amicus were glossy and lurid.) This one is a little-known piece that always gets bad reviews but I happen to like it. Firstly, it has a splendid cast. Secondly, the camerawork is something to behold, the sickly lurid colours blending in with the gorgeous period costumes and attractive, dramatic locations. There is also a little more going on here than meets the eye. Perhaps a subtle nod to the Glamis Castle story...? There's a little bit of class war going on, and despite its vivid rape scene I can't help feeling this isn't quite the exploitation movie it appears. For an early 70s movie it does at least treat the issue seriously; the effect it has on the victim and the fact that no measures can atone for it are believable.A word to the excellent music, beautiful but interspersed with a spooky zither. And Geoffrey Whitehead is very good. The graveyard climax is pretty powerful too, and the closing shot as a camera wanders an empty room to the Bible is a cut above what one expects from this genre. The bad points are the tacky severed hand, the occasional Grand Guignol hamminess and the fact that the film does rather overplay it's spends so long building up to its revelation that by then it will always be a let down. And one other criticism...Catherine recovers from her wedding night ordeal ridiculously quickly, which totally contradicts the film's central premise. Still, the open window symbolism and the Malleus Mallificarum references are neat, as is the wonderful scene of Charles standing by the window as the snow falls and reading the lines from Milton's Comus. This film honestly isn't as bad as you may think and you could certainly do alot worse on a dark winter evening!

Steve G (gb) wrote: Superb film, stranded in an ocean of cinematic mediocrity. So refreshing to see something this good again, after a seemingly endless parade of sub-par drama. As per usual, the casting was distinguished. Excellently written. Terrifically directed. Selections like these, rather than the flashier choices, truly showcase Hitchcock's skill. Steinbeck authored a fascinatingly human story. Tough at time, but impossible not to be riveted by.

There are some scenes that I am sure I wont forget and Will Smith's performance is excellent. The atmosphere and unbearable tension is worth praising and I'm glad I finally saw it.

Michael O (ag) wrote: Completely bananas! No Sicilian sin, hypocrisy, social more, or injustice is left unturned and when uncovered you're slapped in the face twice for even laughing. This is a very funny movie especially today because, at least I hope, italy was a foreign, foreign place in the 60s. It felt like another planet where laws and bylaws and ancient macho traditions basically toss two families around fueled by their own obsessions to adhere to the very arcane laws that oppress them. Very interesting and inspiring.

Russ V (fr) wrote: Return of the Magnificent Seven is more or less the same as The Magnificent Seven. Chris, once again played by Yul Brynner, recruits six other men to help him defend a Mexican village. This wouldn't be that big of an issue, but the movie was much less fun as the original, had much less interesting characters, and fails to live up to The Magnificent Seven and it's all-star cast. The movies name even isn't accurate, as it should be called Return of One of the Magnificent Seven... of which the one that returns (Yul Brynner's Chris) wasn't one of the more interesting of the original seven.
